The motorcycle now comes with tubeless tyres

Honda has updated its 150cc commuter motorcycle, the CB Unicorn with a single channel ABS unit to comply with the mandatory CBS/ABS deadline issued by the government. The ABS-equipped 150cc commuter motorcycle is priced at Rs. 78,815 /- (ex-showroom, Delhi), which makes it costlier by Rs. 6500/- than the non-ABS version of the motorcycle. The motorcycle also comes with tubeless tyres after the update.

The bike remains greatly unchanged and continues to be powered by the same 149.2cc, single-cylinder engine that makes 12.91 BHP at 8000 RPM and 12.80 Nm of torque at 5500 RPM. The single-channel ABS unit is effective on the front wheel, which features a disc brake set up, whereas the rear wheel continues with a drum brake unit. With the update, the CB Unicorn 150 is better equipped than its rivals, like the Bajaj Pulsar 150.

The motorcycle continues to be offered in Silver, Red and Black colour options. The Honda CB Unicorn 150 was briefly discontinued in 2015, in an attempt to replace it with a 160cc version of the motorcycle. The non-ABS variant of the bike will continue to be sold until stocks last or until April 2019 deadline.

Honda CB Unicorn 150 ABS

– Priced at Rs. 78,815/- (ex-showroom, Delhi)
– Costlier by Rs. 6500 /- than the non-ABS unit
– The non-ABS version of the motorcycle will be discontinued after 1st April 2019

Honda CB Unicorn 150 Video Review
The engine on the Honda Unicorn 150 is a gem

Back in 2005, when Honda launched the Unicorn 150, it did quite stir the market. It came with a 149cc engine that was so butter smooth, some of my friends who owned the bike would complain that they could not make out whether the bike’s ignition was on or off after it had been to a service. The smooth and inaudible engine was refined, powerful, fuel-efficient and lighter on the pocket to own as well as to maintain, the Honda Unicorn was everything a 150cc motorcycle could be.

It’s been almost 12 years since the Unicorn 150 was launched and it still manages to do good numbers for Honda. Last year Honda updated the Unicorn with a BS4 engine. However, Honda has now reduced the power output from 13.14 HP to 12.73 HP for no apparent reason. The bike still uses the same 149.2cc air-cooled 4-stroke powerplant that belts out 12.73 HP of power and 12.80 Nm of torque. This motor comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

Suspension duties are via telescopic forks at the front and a monoshock at the rear. The motorbike gets a disc brake at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The Unicorn 150 is available in a choice of three colours – Red, Black and Grey. Prices for the Unicorn 150 start at Rs. 70,267/- (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Honda Unicorn 150 Power

– The Unicorn 150’s power has been reduced from 13.14 HP to 12.73 HP
– The bike is BS4 compliant and gets AHO
– The design of the Unicorn 150 remains the same, as it was 11 years ago

The Honda CB Unicorn 160 has been upgraded to BS IV

The Honda CB Unicorn 160 is a popular bike in its segment and but recently a lot of rumours had been floating that the bike has been discontinued. However, that is not the case and the fact is that Honda has launched the BS IV version (the Hornet has been BS IV since more than a year and the same motor is used on the Unicorn 160) of the CB Unicorn 160 which gets AHO (Automatic Headlamp On), a revised windshield visor and a new colour option.

The Honda CB Unicorn 160 is powered by a 162.71cc, air-cooled, 4-stroke engine that produces 13.82 HP at 8000 RPM and 13.92 Nm at 6000 RPM which is lower than the earlier bike’s 14.5 HP and 14.61 Nm. The engine comes with a 5-speed transmission and top speed is limited to 106 km/hr. The bike gets a telescopic suspension at the front and a monoshock at the rear.

Honda has introduced a new Matte Marvel Blue Metallic colour on the CB Unicorn 160. It is also offered in other colours like Pearl Igneous Black, Matte Axis Grey, Pearl Amazing White and Imperial Red Metallic. The Honda CB Unicorn 160 BS IV is priced at Rs. 79,158/- for the standard variant and Rs. 81,752/- for the CBS variant (all prices ex-showroom, Mumbai).

The degrading sales of the Unicorn 160 could make the company put a standstill on it very soon, the Unicorn 150 has been selling well.
Honda CB Unicorn 160 Road Test
The initial response of buyers was pleasant for the Unicorn 160

Among the most successful 150cc motorcycles, the Honda Unicorn has been on the top sellers list for a long time in the past. And then, the Japanese bikemaker upgraded the engine by adding more capacity and introduced it as the Unicorn 160. Initially, it proved to be a sensible decision by the company looking at the sales of the motorcycle. But what we noticed by the reports, sales of the Unicorn 160 has abruptly fallen and the graph kept on sliding down.

Perhaps, Honda has seen this sales drop because of its own competitor, the Unicorn 150 and Hornet 160. With its absolute muscular naked design and meaty tyres, the Hornet 160 has become one of the top choices of the youth. And, it has seen an impressive demand in the commuter segment market.

If we look back at the sales report of January 2016, the Unicorn 160 had only fetched sales of 52 units. Owing to which, Honda had to relaunch the older Unicorn 150 which performed outstandingly well in the market. Till March, 10,405 units of it were sold and the number went on increasing. Looking at the whole scenario, it seems that the Unicorn 160 has to be out of the competition very soon. Currently, it carries a price tag of Rs. 77,337 (ex showroom, Mumbai) and the 163cc engine develops 14.5 BHP of power.

Honda Unicorn 160 Sales

– The Unicorn 160 will join the Dazzler and Trigger, the other 150cc Honda’s to be discontinued
– Sales went on decreasing and got stuck by January 2016
– The company had to relaunch the Unicorn 150 earlier this year

The Japanese giant has re-launched the bygone Honda Unicorn 150 with a BS-IV engine. This strategic move was planned to increase sales and to meet customer demand, as announced at the 2016 Auto Expo.
Honda Unicorn 150 Red
The new Honda Unicorn 150 takes appearance cues from the old hit model

The motorcycle segment is a tricky business in the Indian market. For the average Indian buyer, a bike must have good mileage, decent ride quality and longevity. Honda has faired decently in this segment with not many eye-catching models. The CB Hornet 160R and CB Unicorn 160 were able to garner mediocre sales and Honda has since been in the search for their solution. As announced at the 2016 Auto Expo, Honda re-launched the Unicorn 150 with a BS-IV certification, resembling the once hit road vehicle.

The price of the 2016 Honda CB Unicorn 150 is now updated on the company’s website and the motorcycle is priced at Rs. 82,512/- (on-road, Mumbai). The above mentioned price doesn’t include optional items with the ex-showroom price being Rs. 74,085/-. Only one variant is offered.

As for the appearance, there aren’t many visibly significant changes. Available in two colours, Red and Black, the Unicorn 150 is back by popular demand. Honda has discontinued the much-popular silver fairing but the design has still retained its strong body panels and fenders. For now, the new Unicorn won’t be released with ABS or CBS, but will receive them as a mandatory package by 2018.

The Honda CB Unicorn 150 is built on a single down-tube frame, which gives it the required agility and stability. It uses telescopic front suspension and a monoshock at the rear. The bike possesses the usual disc and drum combination for the front and rear brakes.

The Honda Unicorn 150 is powered by a single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that displaces 149cc and churns out a decent 13.14 HP at 8500 RPM and produces a peak torque of 12.84 Nm at 5500 RPM. This is a Bharat Stage IV certified engine. So, rest assured this is one for the future. It retains the same 5-speed manual gearbox with the 1-down, 4-up pattern for shifting.

2016 Honda Unicorn 150 Priced At Rs. 82,512/-

– Honda re-launched the old Unicorn 150 with minor changes on the appearance and performance fronts
– The new vehicle has a Bharat Stage IV certified engine and resembles the former quite significantly
– The motorcycle is available in two colours, Red and Black, having excluded the silver fairing
– Pricing is Rs. 69,305/- in Delhi and Rs. 74,085/- in Mumbai (ex-showroom)

Honda CB Unicorn 160 Long Term FInal Report
The Honda CB Unicorn 160 is a much improved bike over its predecessor

The Honda CB Unicorn 160 is much better than its predecessor, offers trouble free riding too

If there’s one popular vehicle from the stable of Honda other than the Activa, it has to be the Unicorn. Launched in the county almost a decade ago, the bike was instantly lapped by people who preferred a refined motor and a relaxed riding position. It became the perfect 150cc machine for daily duties. Over the past years, it got minor updates and continued to sell in good numbers. Like all things, change is necessary in the automotive world too and hence Honda replaced the Unicron 150 with the CB Unicorn 160. We have had the bike since a few months now and have been finding out how well does it perform in varied conditions.

The neutral styling wouldn’t grab attention, aimed at mature riders

The design of the Honda Unicorn 160 is minimalist with no element particularly screaming for attention. The other bikes with which it competes get much more attention grabbing styling which appeals to the youth. Honda has chosen conservative styling to appeal to the middle aged folks who prefer understated looks. Even after being the most torquey bike in the segment, no one can look at it and say that it would beat the others. One element which I particularly like is the H-shaped tail-light which looks cool at night. Even those who see the bike notice the same.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/22114922459/[/flickr]

Mild heat from the engine is noticeable in stop-go traffic

While the motorcycle was previously used for long distance trips, since quite some time it has been doing duty within the city with minimal out station trips. This has helped us find out how it performs in daily riding situations especially stop-go traffic. Heavy traffic conditions is something which this Honda doesn’t like much because the engine starts heating up and it becomes noticeable after some time. Also, after tackling speed bumps which reduce the speed by a fair bit, shifting to first gear becomes inevitable.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/22114039958/[/flickr]

Launching from signals is fun, 11,300 RPM redline is highest in class

Redlining the 162.7cc motor is great fun, leaves other 150cc bikes way behind

There’s one thing which surprised me though. Even after not being a looker, the CB Unicorn does make people strike conversation with you. Maybe it is the red colour of our test bike or maybe it is the Honda name. Answering queries is fun as most of aspects of the bike are better than its predecessor. Another enjoyable scenario is to be in the first line at a traffic signal and wait. As soon as the lights go green, mashing the throttle takes the motorcycle to its massive 11,300 RPM redline in a jiffy and before you know it, you are doing good speeds. Other bikers who catch up at the next signal are red with envy with me having a wicked smile until the signal turns green again.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/21679027324/[/flickr]

Keeping up with faster bikes is easy, cruising at 100 km/hr isn’t a problem

The engine is a proper Honda motor which means that the refinement is excellent and no vibrations are felt. Out on the open roads, redlining the bike in each gear is great fun because the Unicorn 160 loves doing that and doesn’t hesitate at all. Keeping up with bigger bikes isn’t too difficult as Indian roads do give you plenty of opportunities to catch up. The ride quality is excellent with the suspension doing its job very well. Even after putting it through all sorts of potholes and bad roads, it has held its ground very well. But, there’s an underlying stiffness at the rear which makes its presence felt on bad roads.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/22288859452/[/flickr]

The brakes offer good bite, tyres should have been a tad bit wider

Honda CB Unicorn 160 Cost Of Service

* Service cost – Rs. 300/-
* Engine oil – Rs. 280/-
* Consumables – Rs. 50/-

Another element on the Honda CB Unicorn 160 which deserves a special mention are the brakes. Even though it doesn’t get a rear disc brake, the braking is very good. The Combi-Braking System (CBS) helps a lot with this and keeps the rider out of tricky situations. The MRF tyres provide adequate amount of grip but a wider tyre would have made things better albeit reducing fuel efficiency by a bit. Talking of fuel efficiency, with majority of city riding and a fair number of redlining instances, we managed to get a respectable 45 km/l consistently. Riding with a light right wrist helps in taking the figure above 50 km/l but the motor begs you to redline it and you can’t resist sometimes.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/22114042978/[/flickr]

The bike satisfies its target customers well and is a practical option

After riding the Honda CB Unicorn 160 extensively, I now understand why the bike attracts mature riders. The understated looks combined with a powerful yet efficient engine is what draws customers. Yes it misses out on an engine kill switch and heat dissipation isn’t the best but discount these factors and the overall package is brilliant for the price. When we were to swap bikes amongst ourselves, getting the keys to the Unicorn 160 was very easy whereas even asking for the keys to the Suzuki Gixxer was a crime. The Unicorn 160 has gone back to Honda but we have inducted a bike with the same engine into our long term fleet.

The Unicorn CB 160 is a much improved product over its predecessor, the Unicorn 150. It is better in almost all aspects but is a notch below in terms of refinement. It is a practical daily commuter for the middle-aged people.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/22114920779/[/flickr]

It’s time for the Unicorn 160 to make space for another Honda

What’s Cool

* High fuel efficiency even with a rev happy motor
* VFM proposition for someone looking for a fun commuter
* Ride quality is decent even though the rear suspension is a little stiff

What’s Not So Cool

* Engine isn’t as refined as the older 150cc mill
* Wider tyres would improve the handling further

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/22312313951/[/flickr]

The bike has adequate power, gives great fuel efficiency too

Testers’ Note:

“Dazzler, Trigger, Unicorn 160 – three bikes from the same segment with a strong mechanical package, let down by commuter-ish appearance and ergos. Still, the Honda CB Unicorn 160 despite being a commuter for the city, has strong enough performance to put a smile on the rider’s face. It also looks quite good and the smaller tyres might not have the visual strength but result in better mileage where this Japanese motorcycle excels.” – Faisal Khan, Editor, MotorBeam.
“When I was told to switch the Hero Splendor Pro Classic with the Unicorn 160, I took the keys before Faisal changed his mind. I loved the way the motor went all the way to the redline. The suspension felt nice and so did the brakes. Riding position was very commuter-ish and this is one thing which I personally didn’t like much over long rides. However, in the city, the comfortable riding position helps. If one wants a trouble-free commuter, this should be the choice.” – Aman Sancheti, Road Tester, MotorBeam.
“The Honda Unicorn which ran for a long time had the heart of lots of people. With the newer Unicorn 160, the extra power and new design got some appeal but still couldn’t do what the older Unicorn could do. Comfort at all times with just enough power was the oldie’s game, this one though is the fastest in its segment. The Unicorn 160 is more of a city player than a highway cruiser.” – Dhanil Vira, Road Tester, MotorBeam.

Even though the looks are understated, the tail-light grabs attention

Honda has showcased a new variant of the CB Unicorn 160 at the 2016 Auto Expo with a matte grey paint job and body coloured side panels.

The CB Unicorn 160 was launched in 2014

Honda was ruling the 150cc commuter segment with the Unicorn but then the manufacturer made a move that went against it, a new-generation CB Unicorn 160 was launched and the older one was discontinued. But the new street-fighter look was not able to impress buyers and hence the company had to relaunch the older version at the 2016 Auto Expo.

Honda also showcased a new variant of the CB Unicorn 160 at the 2016 Auto Expo painted in matte grey and body coloured side panels. The delivery of this new variant will begin in a while on order basis. However, the upgrade is limited to the paint job while the mechanical aspects remain unchanged.

The Honda CB Unicorn 160 is powered by a 163cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that is good to produce 14.5 BHP at 8000 RPM and 14.61 Nm of torque at 6000 RPM while the engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The same engine does duty on the new Hornet 160R but it is tuned to produce more power.

The Honda Unicorn was originally launched in 2005 and gained popularity in no time with the smooth accelerating 150cc engine and the fresh looks. The bike underwent a number of upgrades since then but a next gen of the bike was launched in 2014 with a completely new body style and was equipped with Honda’s Combi Braking System (CBS).

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India have showcased the CB Unicorn 150 at the ongoing 2016 Auto Expo and it will soon be relaunched.

2016 Honda CB Unicorn 150 Front
The Unicorn 150 was Honda’s most successful bike

Honda has had some difficult recent years with success in the 150cc segment. It seems the Unicorn 150 has been brought back to cope with its decreased sales in the 150cc market. While the Hornet did raise hopes for the Japanese manufacturer, apparently it wants to dominate this segment again with its most popular and most selling product, the CB Unicorn 150.

The 2016 Honda CB Unicorn 150 is essentially the same bike as it was before its discontinuation. It gets the the same color scheme with the same technical specifications. Producing 13.14 BHP at 8500 RPM and 12.84 Nm at 5500 RPM, the motorcycle is all set to re-capture mileage oriented and budget concerned consumers. The bike is expected to be available all around India soon enough and most likely will be priced on similar lines of the previously discontinued model.

The Honda CB Unicorn 160 replaced the very popular Unicorn 150 and has managed to live up to the brand name, despite aggressive competition in the segment.

Honda CB Unicorn 160 Test Ride Review
The CB Unicorn 160 is also Honda’s only well selling premium motorcycle in India

The ‘Unicorn’ moniker has worked extremely well for Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) and in its latest iteration too, the Japanese automaker is gaining positive sales from the motorcycle. The 2015 Honda CB Unicorn 160 made its debut in December last year and has achieved a milestone of over one lakh sales within eight months of launch. Rivalling the Bajaj Pulsar 150, TVS Apache, Yamaha FZ, Suzuki Gixxer and the likes in the segment, it initially felt unlikely that the commuterish stance of the Unicorn 160 would garner it enough sales in the segment.

However, Honda has worked very hard to build the Unicorn brand name and the association worked well for the new model as well. The automaker managed to sell over 10,000 units from the first month itself and the bike has been averaging around 15,000-18,000 units every month since then. For the month of May, the CB Unicorn 160 sold 18,998 units, its highest monthly sales till date. The motorcycle was also the third best seller in the segment in June this year after the Bajaj Pulsar and TVS Apache with 17,434 units sold.

A quick recap on the specifications, the Honda CB Unicorn 160 is powered by a 162.7cc single-cylinder engine tuned to produce 14.5 BHP and 14.61 Nm of torque, paired to a 5-speed gearbox. The bike gets telescopic forks at the front and a monoshock unit at the rear. Braking duties are performed by a disc brake up front and a drum brake setup at the rear. Honda also offers its Combi-Braking System (CBS) on the Unicorn 160. Prices for the CB Unicorn 160 begin at Rs. 72,412/- going up to Rs. 77,668/- for the CBS variant (all-prices, ex-showroom Delhi).

The Honda CB Unicorn 160 has successfully taken over from the old Unicorn 150 and Trigger

Honda CB Unicorn 160 Long Term Review

The CB Unicorn 160 is powerful yet hassle free ride for the city, it offers supreme comfort

Honda’s first motorcycle launch in India and also its most popular motorcycle brand, the CB Unicorn has sold consistently in good numbers and after a decade, has finally been replaced by an all new model, the CB Unicorn 160. Honda just didn’t pick up another bike from its massive global portfolio and launched it in India, instead it developed the Unicorn 150 specifically for the Indian market, launching it in 2005. The motorcycle instantly became a favourite of middle-aged men who in spite of new options, simply wouldn’t look elsewhere. With the latest Unicorn 160, Honda has somehow killed two birds with one stone, it has finally said bye to the old Uni while diverting Trigger buyers to the Unicorn. The powerful Honda 162.7cc commuter has joined our long term fleet and has given us a fair idea as to why so many people prefer it.

Not a looker, the Unicorn’s neutral looks won’t call for a second glance

Honda always plays it safe with the design of its bikes and although the Unicorn 160 packs in the highest displacement motor in the segment with the most torque output (even the powerful Pulsar 150 NS doesn’t beat it), it simply doesn’t look fast enough. Honda’s conservative design puts off a lot of young buyers and that’s the reason why the company is selling bikes to a more mature audience who want something neutral looking. As is always the case, the styling does grow over you with time but this isn’t a bike which would make you look twice once you park it while we do tend to stare at its rivals when ever we encounter them.

An apt ride in the city, this bike is very easy to handle in crowded areas

The first thing I did after getting the Honda CB Unicorn 160 was to ride it in the city as that’s where it feels at home. But there was a problem, everywhere I would go, people would turn around and stare at this motorcycle. This starts to contradict my previous paragraph or does it? Not really because the people who were looking at this red Unicorn 160 weren’t young, they were uncles and before I could make sense, someone struck a conversation. How is the bike? Is it better than the old Unicorn? What mileage does it give? Among these inquisitive people, some were Unicorn 150 owners and I had to reply back in a subtle way, conveying that the new Unicorn 160 is like a thousand times better than the old model.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/19516966482/[/flickr]

Wider tyres would have been nice, especially in rainy conditions of Mumbai

The Unicorn 160 has terrific pick-up & redlines like how a Honda should

In India it is difficult to convince people about new products, everyone wants to buy a proven machine, thereby having the same risk averse nature which Honda’s design department carries. When you tell them about the positives of the new Unicorn, they would argue that the old one is cheaper and smoother. I would have explained to them the concept of evolution but those 14 and a half horses were ready to leave everyone behind in a jiffy, so full throttle I did and I suppose they got their answer when they say the Unicorn fly by. What gives this bike such stellar performance is of course the class leading torque of 14.61 Nm, this Honda having instant response and offering a butter smooth idle.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/19335716490/[/flickr]

The Honda CB Unicorn 160 is surprisingly at home on the highways

It’s the performance of the Unicorn 160 which I like the most, the low-end is strong and so is the mid-range while the top-end is accentuated by the massive 11,300 RPM redline which is the highest in this space. This is a true Honda heart beating in there because it sounds sweet and the refinement levels really blow you over (thanks to the counter balancer which ensures no vibes), no knocking whatever the gear and speed. The gearing is tall and for a redline nut like me, I extract every inch of the rev limit to have some fun on the open road. 0-100 km/hr comes up in a quick 16.15 seconds which makes it the fastest bike in the segment! That’s the reason why Suzuki Gixxer riders are left in the dust and have no idea what struck them at the traffic lights.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/18902773483/[/flickr]

Good ride quality means you can take it anywhere, any how, any time

However, it’s not all praises because being a Honda there are drawbacks or rather it’s something which doesn’t appeal to biking enthusiasts like us. Yes, I am talking about the position of the pegs. Every time I get on the saddle, I put my feet way behind because we all are used to rearset pegs. But the frontset pegs offer a ton of comfort and so does the upright riding position and the light steering. This only robs away confidence while riding fast because the Unicorn 160 is a fine machine which can sprout a smile on your face with its nimble and surefooted handling.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/18902763723/[/flickr]

Thanks to the potent mill, cruising on the highway is effortless and overtaking is easy

The CBS brakes are just fantastic, makes stopping trouble free at all times

One will be surprised by how good the Honda CB Unicorn 160 is on the open road. It munches up miles with little effort and the sweet motor makes it a breeze to overtake slow moving traffic, a quick downshift and bang you are gone. The ride quality is pliant but the rear suspension is on the stiffer side which can be a pain on bad roads. It does provide good stability to the Unicorn at high speeds, the real top whack being 114 km/hr. The MRF tyres offer very good grip but are small in size in the interest of economy and with a light right wrist, we have managed the mileage figure crossing the 50 km/l mark.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/18902759003/[/flickr]

An excellent city bike, the Unicorn 160 beats its rivals hands down in practicality

Things start to make a lot of sense now, the Honda CB Unicorn 160 carries all the positives of the old model and improves on crucial aspects by offering even better performance than before. It is also modern now with updated styling, all digital instrument cluster, CBS brakes and an engine which is quite a modern unit with fins for better cooling. Being easy to ride, high on mileage and hassle free at all times makes this the pick of mature buyers who aren’t used to an engine kill switch to want one on their bike and aren’t looking to take to valley roads on weekends or impress the opposite gender. As long as the Unicorn 160 isn’t compared with its rivals, it’s a splendid motorcycle in the 150cc segment but then, our long term garage makes us draw comparisons.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/19542847622/[/flickr]

Our long term bike fleet will soon be joined by a cafe racer, diversity at its best

We have the best of best from the 150cc space in our fleet and everybody including the mature riders (riders who don’t care about speed or looks) pluck for the keys of the Suzuki Gixxer. In fact, the reason I am riding the Unicorn 160 currently is, I don’t have to fight it out with my team mates for its keys while to get hold of the Gixxer, a lucky draw is in order. But when you compare this Honda with Yamaha’s top selling bike, you realise that the Unicorn 160 has gone one up over the FZ and that’s the reason why the ‘Wing Rider’ managed to beat the ‘Lord Of The Streets’ in sales in recent months. Now maybe I should go for a spin on the KTM!

Despite a slow start, the Honda CB Unicorn 160 is picking up momentum in the 150cc segment and overtook the popular Yamaha FZ in terms of sales in April 2015.

Honda CB Unicorn 160 Test Ride Review
The CB Unicorn is the second best selling bike in the 150cc space after the Pulsar 150

Having built a trustworthy brand name with ‘Unicorn’ over the years in the country, Honda India came back to the brand name after dabbling with the Dazzler and Trigger monikers in the past, and the strategy is surely paying off well for the Japanese auto giant. With the 150cc space having always been a battleground for most bike makers, the CB Unicorn 160 is going great guns and overtook the extremely popular Yamaha FZ in the segment in terms of sales for the month of April 2015.

The Honda CB Unicorn 160 clocked a healthy 19,994 units in April this year, catapulting itself to the second position right behind the Bajaj Pulsar 150 that clocked 38,549 units during the same period. The Yamaha FZ that has been one of the very strong products in the 150cc space over the years did a consistent 15,396 units in April this year and could not match up to the CB Unicorn 160’s popularity. Contrary to the rumours of Honda’s newest motorcycle not doing well in the market, the sales numbers paint an entirely different picture altogether.

In fact, the Honda CB Unicorn 160 has been consistently climbing the charts ever since sales commenced in January this year. The automaker sold 6354 units of the 160cc offering in the first month of 2015 and managed to overtake the young blood Suzuki Gixxer in the process. Furthermore, sales saw a major upshift in February this year bouncing to 16,200 units while there was a slight dip in March 2015 with 14,717 units sold. Nonetheless, the impressive numbers for April 2015 have surely consolidated the CB Unicorn 160’s position in the market and we only expect the numbers to grow from here onwards.

The strong position of the CB Unicorn 160 in the market can be attributed to the discontinuation of the age old CB Unicorn 150, as prospective buyers are left with no choice but to opt for the new model. Powered by an all-new 162.7cc single-cylinder engine, the CB Unicorn makes 14.5 BHP and 14.61 Nm of torque, paired to a 5-speed gearbox. Despite certain rough edges, the bike has a pleasing persona to itself, mixing performance with daily riding while that extremely refined motor is the gem in the entire package. Prices for the CB Unicorn 160 start at Rs. 72,376/- (ex-showroom, Delhi).

April 2015 150cc Motorcycle Sales

1) Bajaj Pulsar 150 – 38,549 units

Honda has officially discontinued the CB Unicorn 150 and has also removed the motorcycle from its Indian website. The CB Unicorn 160 will be taking the Unicorn nameplate ahead.

Honda Unicorn
The CB Unicorn 150 was always a good seller for Honda

Honda has officially discontinued the CB Unicorn 150 from the Indian two-wheeler market and the bike has also been removed from the company’s website. The motorcycle has been on sale in India for 10 years and was one of Honda’s oldest motorcycles offered in the country. This move comes a little late as Honda dealerships had stopped taking bookings for the same model in February itself. The motorcycle will continue to be produced in India, but for the export markets only. However, this does not end the model’s legacy as the more powerful CB Unicorn 160 takes its place.

The Honda CB Unicorn 150 has been on sale for a long time, but the bike has always performed well on the sales front. It has always been a very popular model in Honda’s stable and might have been the reason why other similarly powered models from the same company did not manage to do well. The 2015 Honda CB Unicorn 160 which is powered by a refined 163.2cc engine will be taking the Unicorn name forward. The sober looking motorcycle gives out a maximum power of 14.5 PS and 14.6 Nm of torque, paired to a 5-speed gearbox. It has a digital instrument cluster and is offered with the option of Combi-Braking System (CBS). The engine get Honda Eco-Technology (HET), which improves fuel efficiency.

With the CB Unicorn 150 discontinued, the Japanese company now only sells the CB Trigger, CB Unicorn 160 and the CBR150R in the 150cc space. The CB Trigger and CBR150R have not been doing well in the market and the former is due for a facelift in the coming months. Honda manufactured 24,357 units of the CB Unicorn 150 in April 2014 while in the same month this year, the company only produced 131 units, 48 units were exported. Many prospective buyers are willing to pay a premium to get the old Unicorn as some still don’t want to upgrade to the better 160 model.

The Honda CB Unicorn 150 will continue to be manufactured in the country for export markets where the bike continues to be a popular offering.

Honda Unicorn
The CB Unicorn 150 still saw strong demand despite the new offerings from Honda

A decade after it went on sale, Honda India has officially discontinued the very popular CB Unicorn 150 in the Indian two-wheeler market. The Unicorn 150 has now been replaced by the newly launched CB Unicorn 160 that has received a positive response from the market. Honda dealerships across the country had stopped taking bookings for the Unicorn 150 last month and only a few dealers with unsold stock were able to provide the model. The bike will continue to be produced at the Japanese giant’s Indian facility but restricted to export markets only.

The move surely does not come as a surprise since the Honda CB Unicorn 150 was in the market for a long time now. Despite launching the better looking CB Dazzler (discontinued) and CB Trigger models above the Unicorn in the past, the popularity of the no-nonsense commuter refused to diminish and the bike continued to show strong sales as ever. Discontinuing the Unicorn 150 could also be Honda’s trick to push its other 150cc segment products that are yet to match up to the Unicorn’s popularity.

The 2015 Honda CB Unicorn 160 though is a perfect replacement to the original model. Reprising the Unicorn brand name, the bike comes with the same understated looks and an ultra-refined 163.2cc motor that is tuned to produce 14.5 PS of power and 14.6 Nm of torque, paired to a 5-speed gearbox. The bike also gets an all-digital instrument cluster, Combi-Braking System (CBS) for better stopping power and Honda Eco-Technology (HET) for improved fuel efficiency.

With the CB Unicorn 150 no more for sale, Honda’s 150cc lineup comprises of the CB Unicorn 160, CB Trigger and the CBR150R motorcycles. It needs to be seen now if the manufacturer will also discontinue the CB Trigger in the future with sales never been a strong point of the bike and is priced too closely to the new Unicorn 160. The move will also help improve production capacity for the Unicorn 160 in a bid to address the demand more effectively.
