Mahindra Thar 5 Door version to get sunroof along with more features

Mahindra Thar 5 door test mule has been spotted recently with a sunroof for the first time. Seems like the Indian carmaker will differentiate the two models drastically in terms of features.

The test mule spotted here is heavily camouflaged but the medium sized sunroof is clearly visible from this top angle. It looks more biased towards the second row of seats.

The Indian audience gets quite excited for having a sunroof in a car. Some of them believe that it’s fine to pop out one’s head out of the sunroof, specially children. Let us warn you all that this act is very dangerous and sometimes fatal. We hope all our readers use the sunroof wisely, when the car is standstill.

Getting back to the 5 door Thar. Mahindra is expected to add more features and offer slightly different styling compared to the 3-door Thar. It will be priced premium too.

Recently one of the top officials confirmed that the 5-door version will be launched in 2024. The new SUV is expected to be offered with both 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine options with manual and automatic transmission options. Mahindra will also be offering RWD and 4WD variants.

Mahindra Thar 5 Door launch timeline revealed

Mahindra Thar 5 Door is one of the most anticipated SUVs in recent times. The long wheelbase version of the Thar is currently undergoing testing. We have been spotting test mules of the 5-door SUV since a long while.

Launch

There were speculations that the bigger Thar will be launched in 2023. However, a top official from the company has confirmed that the Mahindra Thar 5 Door will hit the road next year, in 2024.

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto and Farm Sector), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd has confirmed the launch timeline. He says the 5-door Thar won’t be launched this year but instead will come in 2024.

Design

While the prototypes on test look exactly like the 3-door Thar, we believe there will be some styling changes. The overall design will be the same of course but we can expect some tweaks on the exterior to differentiate the two.

The front profile might get a new grille design. While the headlights on the test mules are round and the production version will most likely get the same shape, Mahindra should differentiate it with Square headlight to give it a more retro look.

The side profile will be longer due to the extended wheelbase to accommodate the additional doors. Here we can see a new set of alloy wheels for the bigger version of Thar. The rear might look the same because there isn’t much to change apart from the tail light design.

Interior

The dashboard will be borrowed from the 3-door Thar and it will look the same. However, there will be some tweaks in terms of features and trim colours. We have also spotted a big centre arm rest for the front passengers in one of the test mules.

The second row of seats will now get a proper bench to accommodate three adults. You can expect generous legroom and headroom in the second row. There will be more boot space on offer now.

Engine

Mahindra will be offering the same 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine and the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine option with the 5-door Thar. We don’t expect any changes in terms of power and torque figures. However, they might change the tuning for the heavier vehicle.

Both the engines are expected to be offered with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options. Mahindra will be offering both 4×4 and 4×2 variants with the new 5-door Thar.

Price

The bigger 5-door SUV will come with a lot of changes mechanically to accommodate the additional doors. It will also be offering more features to differentiate with the current 3-door Thar. We might see a new name too, like Armada for this version of Thar. We can expect the pricing to be Rs. 1.5-2 lakhs more expensive variant to variant compared to the 3-door version. Price range likely to be around Rs. 13.50 lakhs to Rs. 19.50 lakhs (ex-showroom).

The new generation Mahindra Thar has achieved a new production milestone of 1 lakh units. The 1,00,000th model rolled off the assembly line recently, it was painted in the new Everest White shade.

Considering the fact that it is a lifestyle vehicle, 1 lakh units production is a huge milestone to achieve in just 2.5 years of time. We believe if the capacity was more and the supply chain in place all this while, the number would have been much more significant.

The Indian UV maker has tapped a wide variety of audience and made the Thar a very desirable product. The biggest USP of this vehicle is the styling and the road presence which is quite unique. Yes it resembles the Jeep Wrangler but the Thar has its own desi vibe to it.

With the recent introduction of 4×2 variants at a much lower price point, the Thar is now more accessible to a wider audience. Some of the variants have a huge waiting period of over a year.

Soon Maruti Suzuki will enter the mass market lifestyle segment with the Jimny. While the Jimny belongs to a relatively different segment, it will catch a lot of attention in the market and might put a small dent on Thar’s sales.

Mahindra Thar RWD pricing revised after about two months of launch

Mahindra has revised the pricing of Thar RWD variants after the introductory period is over. The Indian UV maker launched the 4×2 Thar on 9th January.

It came with three variants – AX (O) Diesel MT, LX Diesel MT and LX Petrol AT. The intro pricing for the same were Rs. 9.99 lakhs, Rs. 10.99 lakhs and Rs. 13.49 lakhs respectively (all prices, ex-showroom).

While AX (O) Diesel MT and LX Petrol AT pricing remains the same, the LX Diesel MT variant gets a price hike of Rs. 50,000/-. It now comes with a retail price of Rs. 11.49 lakhs (ex-showroom).

The diesel variants of the RWD Thar are powered by a 1.5-litre D117 CRDe engine producing
117 BHP and 300 Nm torque with 6-speed manual transmission. The petrol variant of the RWD range gets the same 2.0-litre turbo mStallion 150 TGDi engine producing 150 BHP and 320 Nm torque with 6-speed automatic transmission.

The 4WD variants have a waiting period of up to 4 weeks. RWD petrol version has a waiting of up to 5 weeks. RWD diesel has a huge waiting time of 74 weeks.

Mahindra Thar RWD is getting a lot of attention, huge waiting period

Mahindra launched the Thar RWD with an attractive price point last month and now the SUV has a huge waiting period. The diesel variant is in great demand and has the longest waiting queue.

As you can see from the table above, Mahindra has managed to streamline the production and deliveries of the Thar to a great extent. The 4WD variants have a waiting period of up to 4 weeks, which means you can get the delivery within a month.

Meanwhile the RWD petrol version has a waiting of up to 5 weeks, which will take a little over a month to deliver. However, the RWD diesel has a crazy waiting time of 74 weeks! Which means you might have to wait for more than a year to get the delivery of this trim. It also depends on the colour option you choose.

The Indian UV maker has nailed the VFM factor with the launch of the RWD trims. It is apt for those who don’t take their cars off-road. The RWD diesel is powered by a XUV300 sourced 1.5-litre diesel producing 117 PS and 300 Nm of torque. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine produces 152 PS and 320 Nm torque.

Mahindra Thar 5-Door 4×2 spotted with heavy camouflage

Mahindra Thar 5-Door 4×2 spotted testing, reveals interior details. The Indian UV maker is preparing to launch the bigger version of Thar in January 2024.

The long wheelbase Thar has been spotted testing multiple times of late. However, this time the SUV has been caught revealing the boot space and interior details of the prototype.

The exterior styling looks exactly the same as the 3-door Thar including the front and rear profile. Of course it will get a longer wheelbase to accommodate the additional 2 doors and it looks quite big in that regard. Has a similar appearance like Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

We believe the final production version might get some styling tweaks to differentiate the two products. Mahindra is also expected to give the 5-door version a new name altogether.

The dashboard too looks similar to the current version on sale. There is no 4×4 lever with the automatic gear lever which confirms the presence of 4×2 variants when it gets launched next year.

The second row of seats get adequate headroom and legroom as far as we can see from the video. The footage of boot space isn’t clear but we believe since it will have no third row seats (not confirmed yet), it will get enough room for proper luggage space.

In terms of engine options, Mahindra is likely to offer the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine option with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options.

Mahindra Thar RWD price announced, introductory price for first 10,000 bookings

Mahindra Thar RWD launched, price starts from Rs. 9.99 lakhs (ex-showroom and introductory). This introductory pricing is valid for the first 10,000 bookings.

It is almost Rs. 3.60 lakhs cheaper than the 4×4 variant. Mahindra will cater to a wider audience with the introduction of the RWD variants. It is targeted to the buyers who don’t go off-road. There is a huge chunk of buyers who are willing to buy the Thar just for the looks of this lifestyle vehicle.

The diesel variants of the RWD Thar get a new 1.5-litre D117 CRDe engine producing
117 BHP and 300 Nm torque with 6-speed manual transmission. The petrol variant of the RWD range gets the same 2.0-litre turbo mStallion 150 TGDi engine producing 150 BHP and 320 Nm torque with 6-speed automatic transmission.

There is an update in the 4WD range as well. The UV maker has introduced electronic brake locking differential developed with Bosch for all 4WD trims. Now, mechanical locking differential is available as an option with the LX diesel 4WD variants. Powertrain options remain the same for the 4WD range.

The entire range comes with new colour options – Blazing Bronze and Everest White. There is a new range of accessories on offer. It comes with exterior and interior style packs in four different designs. Also gets front and rear armrest with storage. The rear
armrests will be equipped with cup-holders and USB charging ports.

With this aggressive new pricing, we believe Mahindra is targeting the upcoming Maruti Jimny buyers as well.

Mahindra Thar 4×2 brochure revealed ahead of its launch

Mahindra is all set to launch the Thar 4×2 on 9th January, 2023. The Indian UV maker will update the Thar with new variants, colour options, engine specs and accessories.

As we have revealed recently, the 4×2 Thar will be the new entry-level variant that gets a rear-wheel drive setup. It will come with a smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 118 HP and 300 Nm of torque. It will only be available with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The 2.0-litre turbo petrol will be offered in the same 152 HP and 320 Nm tune but with only 6-speed automatic transmission option. The 4×4 variants will continue with the same specs having 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol.

The new colour options – Everest White and Blazing Bronze will be offered with both 4×2 and 4×4 variants. There are new accessories on offer as well including red accents graphics.

Mahindra Thar will soon get a new entry-level RWD variant, dealer dispatches have commenced already. The 4×2 variant will come with some changes in terms of engine options and colour options.

Firstly, it will come with new Blazing Bronze and Everest White colour options. We believe these will be offered with the 4×4 variants as well in the near future.

The RWD version will get new drivetrain options. There will be a new diesel engine on offer – D117 CRDe 1.5-litre unit that produces 117 PS and 300 Nm of torque. It will only be available in manual transmission option. In comparison, the 2.2-litre diesel unit of the 4×4 version produces 130 PS but the same 300 Nm torque output.

The 2.0-litre turbo petrol mStallion TGDi remains the same in the 4×2 variant producing 150 PS and 320 Nm torque. However, it will only be offered with the 6-speed automatic transmission.

Other highlights of the car remains unchanged including 18-inch alloys, all-terrain tyres, ESP, cruise control, electric ORVMs, touchscreen infotainment, fog lamps, roof mounted speakers, etc.

Mahindra to offer the Thar with a new colour this month. The Indian UV maker is preparing to launch the 4×2 version of the SUV soon. It has been spotted in a golden shade which is officially called Blazing Bronze in Mahindra’s colour palette.

The rear-wheel drive Thar will get both 1.5-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine options with both 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options. The 1.5-litre diesel will produce 115 BHP and 300 Nm torque. The 2.0-litre petrol puts out 150 BHP and 300/320 Nm torque.

Currently the Thar is offered with 4×4 as standard across all the trims. The new 4×2 variant with a more attractive price tag will cater to a wider audience.

It will come with a new 1.5-litre diesel engine borrowed from the XUV300 that produces 115 BHP and 300 Nm of torque. It will be available with both 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options.

Along with this Mahindra will continue to offer the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 150 BHP and 300/320 Nm of torque. Yes, the petrol version too will get both 6-speed manual and automatic options.

Now with the 1.5-litre diesel mill, the entry-level Thar will come under the lower tax bracket and hence will get a pricing of around Rs. 10-11 lakhs (ex-showroom).

This setup makes it much more attractive for buyers who don’t go off-road and want the lifestyle appeal of the SUV.

There are no major changes in this version. The exterior doesn’t get the 4×2 badging. The interior gets additional storage space instead of the 4×4 lever.

This smart move by Mahindra comes ahead of the Maruti Jimny launch. While the Jimny will be targeted to a different set of buyers with a lower price range and 5-door setup, the Thar 4×2 might still eat into its sales.

Dealer level bookings might have started by now as the car has been spotted in a stockyard.

Mahindra is preparing to launch the most affordable variant of the Thar which will get a 2WD layout. Yes the entry-level variant will come with rear-wheel drive. Currently all the variants are offered with 4×4 system as standard.

The new variant will also come with a smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine. This will make the Thar fall under the lower tax bracket. This variant will be Rs. 2 lakh cheaper than the current base AX trim and will be priced around Rs. 11 lakhs (ex-showroom).

It will share its engine with the Mahindra Bolero Neo. The 1.5-litre diesel unit in the Bolero Neo churns out 100 BHP and 260 Nm of torque. However, Mahindra might give it a higher state of tune. It will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, there will be no automatic on offer.

This will be a clever move by the Indian UV maker to cater a wider audience with a more affordable lifestyle SUV. This strategy might be directly targeted towards Maruti which is readying their Jimny for Indian market launch.

Mahindra is also working on the 5-door Thar which is scheduled to launch in 2024.
