The adventure motorcycle will be revealed on 5th November at the Eicma 2019.
2020 Suzuki V-Strom 1000
The overall design is sleeker with sharper body panels

Suzuki has shared a teaser video of what looks like a production-ready version of the 2020 V-Strom 1000. The DR BIG-inspired motorcycle bids adieu to its part-analogue display and instead gets a large LCD screen. It also gets a tall windscreen, a rectangular headlight (inspired by Suzuki Katana) and a bodypaint scheme that mimics the famous DR BIG.

The Eicma 2019 is just a week away and the motorcycle is set to break cover on the first day; 5th November 2019 itself. What can be fathomed from the teased video is that the bike is entirely refashioned with a sharper fairing. The seat now seems to be split instead of being a single-piece bench.

Even though there is no formal announcement about the same, it is likely that the 2020 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 might see a change of heart or some hardware since the exhaust system and engine casings seem to be different. The alteration might be done to meet the new emission norms. Suzuki could offer a less powerful alternative or a slightly higher displacement engine to meet the same.

Shootout: Benelli TRK 502 vs Suzuki V-Strom 650XT

Shootout No. 209

Price OTR Mumbai: Rs. 6,40,700/- (Benelli TRK 502), Rs. 8,63,753/- (Suzuki V-Strom 650XT)

Touring capabilities with a hint of adventure? Both these bikes are loaded to go the distance you can only think of

There have been a lot of motorcycles coming in, in the last few years. But it is the adventure category that has had made everyone go nuts. While we rode the Benelli TRK 502 just a few weeks back and also had a chance to ride the Suzuki V-Strom 650. We thought what if we compare both the middle-weight adventure-tourers. Priced quite apart, both the motorcycles serve the same purpose, a battle of an Italian heavy-weight against a sharp Japanese machine.

Motor Quest: Suzuki launched the V-Strom last year in India, while it was on sale worldwide since quite some time. This year, Benelli launched the TRK 502 and the 502X which they had showcased 3 years back in IBW. Both the motorcycles have been on sale worldwide while they enter the Indian market when everyone is looking for an adventure.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/40503799343/[/flickr]

The V-Strom is sleek and sharp, the TRK looks bulky and huge

Styling – The Benelli TRK 502 was showcased in 2016 and since then the design has been exactly the same. However, the V-Strom incorporated the design from its elder sibling and looks a lot similar to the V-Strom 1000. In comparison, the Benelli is bulky, speaks for road presence while the Suzuki stays sleek and small. The adventure fairing on the TRK is edgy and almost twice the size of that on the V-Strom. However, the headlight unit is bigger on the V-Strom while the windscreen visor also seems more purposeful. There are a lot of tubular parts and exposed chassis on the TRK while the V-Strom stays quite covered and neat. The Benelli gets LED indicators while the V-Strom has halogen units while both get LED tail light.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/40503799393/[/flickr]

The TRK has more road presence yet the V-Strom looks quite bright

Both the motorcycles are attention seekers, while the V-Strom is sleek, the TRK 502 is a bulky machine

The crash protectors on the TRK also make it look huge however the same on the V-Strom are small and appropriate. The TRK 502 is equipped with 10-spoke alloy wheels whereas the V-Strom gets spoked wheels. The colour scheme on the V-Strom is also quite appealing but the single shade all over the TRK looks attractive too. The V-Strom here had a plastic topbox which stil made it look sleeker, however, the TRK 502 had metal panniers adding more to the bulk. Overall, the Benelli has the looks and attracts more attention over the Suzuki.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/47417004262/[/flickr]

V-Strom’s cluster is loaded with a lot of information

Instrument Cluster and Switchgear – The instrument cluster on the V-Strom as well as the TRK is an analogue-digital unit. But the one on the V-Strom displays a lot more information and it is segregated really well. Both the consoles have a tachometer in the analogue section while the digital bit includes the odometer, twin trip meters, clock, temperature and fuel gauge and a gear position indicator. With a single switch, one can switch between miles to kilometres on the TRK. However, the V-Strom provides more information with the battery voltage, current traction level and live and trip mileage indicator.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/47469948801/[/flickr]

TRK’s console looks dated in comparison

The console on the V-Strom is also easier to read in bright daylight as compared to that on the TRK

Switchgear quality too feels better on the V-Strom as the buttons have a better fit and finish. The TRK does duty with simple switches both on the left and right. While the V-Strom gets a mode switch on the left with which the rider can toggle through the cluster and also change the traction levels. ABS is not switchable on the V-Strom and hence it does not get a button for that. But the TRK has switchable ABS and as a reason gets a separate dedicated ABS switch on the left side.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/40503799313/[/flickr]

Suzuki has a 35 mm higher seat height than the Benelli

Ergonomics – Both the V-Strom and the TRK have an upright riding posture but the Suzuki has 35 mm of extra seat height against the Benelli. The handlebar is also taller and closer to the rider on the Benelli while the V-Strom feels slightly further away. Shorter riders would find the TRK more comfortable and accessible than the V-Strom but the pillion seat is too high on the TRK. Hence the pillion would love to be on the V-Strom as it has more space to move around. The rear-view mirrors on the Benelli are not that useful but look good while the ones on the V-Strom might look too huge, they provide a good view of what’s behind. The V-Strom also gets knuckle guard and both the bikes get adjustable brake levers. Overall, the V-Strom is an easy goer but the TRK feels more composed.

Suzuki V-Strom 650XT Review

Bike Tested: Suzuki V-Strom 650XT; Road Test No. 1008; Test Location: Jaipur

Price OTR Mumbai: Rs. 8,63,650/- (Accessory Kit: Rs. 77,000/-)

V in V-Strom stands for the V-Twin engine configuration while Strom is used to represent immense current or power

Suzuki got the V-Strom 1000 a few years back as everyone was getting adventure class motorcycles. This year, Suzuki had some different plans with the launch of not one but two middle-weight motorcycles. The GSX-S750 was introduced early this year but Suzuki wanted a piece of a pie from the adventure category too. Make way for the Suzuki V-Strom 650XT. An adventure-sports-tourer as Suzuki calls it, it is the latest kid on the block which makes its way into the middle-weight segment for India. We rode the V-Strom in and around Jaipur last week and to be honest, it literally has no competition for what it’s actually worth.

Motor Quest: The first Suzuki V-Strom 650 (also known as the DL650) was launched in 2004. It had an aluminium chassis and fuel injection right from the start. The second generation came in 2011 with a few more updates to match the competition. The latest iteration to the V-Strom 650 came in 2017 and we got the 650XT variant for India in the second half of 2018. Made in Japan at the Suzuki Toyokawa plant, the V-Strom 650XT comes to India via the CKD route.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/31535382808/[/flickr]

Vertically stacked halogen lights look unusual with the front beak

Styling – With a first look anyone will be able to make out that the V-Strom is a definite adventure motorcycle. With its long-travel suspension, fixed semi-fairing which has a beak and a tall wind visor. A huge tank along that semi-fairing which leads up to a long and wide seat for the rider as well as pillion. Long and sturdy grab rails with a metal base to mount a top-box. Vertically stacked twin headlamp at the front which may look uncanny but gets the job done, it lights up the road pretty well. The V-Strom also get a stubby exhaust which has a chrome tip, only part of chrome seen on the motorcycle. The monoshock is a linkage unit and hence even with extra space under the seat, it’s not easily visible.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/31535382678/[/flickr]

Angular design flow goes from the front to the end

Knuckle guards, belly pan and the spoked-alloy rims are the additions to the regular 650 for the XT variant

As we were riding the V-Strom with all the accessories, the bike looked even more appealing. The accessory kit includes a dresser bar (better known as the crash guard), main stand, aluminium chain cover and a top-box which has a capacity of 55-litres. The wind visor by far has the best design of all the adventure bikes and it’s adjustable too. But one would need a pair of allen keys to adjust them. The Suzuki V-Strom 650XT is available in two colour variants – the yellow which was our test model and a black and white scheme (this gets silver spokes on the rims).

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/44686166624/[/flickr]

The analogue-digital instrument cluster is loaded with a lot of info

Instrument Cluster and Switchgear – The Suzuki V-Strom 650 gets an analogue-digital unit which has the tachometer in analogue while everything else is digital. There are dual-spilt digital screens surrounded by tell-tale lights. The top screen shows the speed with the gear position indicator while the second screen displays everything from a clock, ambient temperature, engine temperature, traction level and a fuel gauge. It also displays live fuel consumption, total fuel consumption, distance to empty, twin trip meters and an odometer. It might not look the best but has tons of information.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/44686167934/[/flickr]

The handlebars have enough height, the view from the rider’s POV is pretty decent

You need to let off the throttle to get the traction engaged to a particular mode

The switchgear quality is just brilliant too. The right side contains the kill-switch, starter button and a hazard light switch. While the left one contains a horn button, indicator switch, high-low switch and a set of toggle keys. The toggle keys help to go through the various trip meters and other details but they also help to change the traction level. You can actually change the traction control on the fly. The V-Strom also gets adjustable brake lever but misses out on an adjustable clutch lever.

Suzuki V-Strom 650 adventure motorcycle has been showcased at the ongoing 2018 Auto Expo.

2018 Suzuki V-Strom 650 1

Suzuki had made it clear earlier this year that it will be showcasing a total of 17 products at the 2018 Auto Expo. The list included two all-new products as well and one of them is the Suzuki V-Strom 650. The middle-weight adventure motorcycle has been showcased at the event and comes across as a direct competitor to the well-established Kawasaki Versys 650. With a seat height of 835 mm and kerb weight of 216 kgs, the bike won’t be easily suited to shorter riders.

In India, the Japanese automaker aims to come up with a competitive asking price and is considering domestic assembly of the vehicle to achieve the same. True to its adventure pedigree, the V-Strom comes with minimal bodywork and gets a standard riding posture with raised suspension and ride height. It sits on an aluminium frame, gets adjustable Showa suspension at either end and flaunts aluminium wheels with anodized wire spokes. Off-road tyres come from Bridgestone with 110-section and 150-section rubber at the front and rear respectively.

The Suzuki V-Strom 650 draws power from a 645cc, liquid-cooled, V-twin engine that develops 71 HP of power and 66 Nm of torque. The motor comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox and is known for its refinement. Apart from height adjustable windshield and Suzuki Easy Start System, ABS and traction control are also part of the equipment list. Globally, the motorcycle is sold in two variants – V-Strom 650 standard and V-Strom 650XT – and is a pretty successful model as it offers greater versatility than its 1000cc counterpart.

Braking is performed via dual disc brakes at the front and a single disc brake at the rear. The V-Strom 650 gets 170 mm of ground clearance and a 20-litre fuel tank. Suzuki is likely to bring the top-of-the-line 650XT variant to India but it would be no surprise if they launch the standard variant as well. The brand will be currently ascertaining audience response at the event. Expected to come with a price tag of around Rs. 6.5 lakhs (ex-showroom), the V-Strom 650 India launch is still some time away as the manufacturer will have to align its assembly process first.

Adventure tourers are slowly becoming an important and prominent segment of the Indian motorcycle market. While Suzuki already sells the V-Strom 1000 in India, it is now considering to bring in the smaller V-Strom 650 to India. A senior Suzuki official has confirmed the same.

Though not decided on the launch timeline yet, Suzuki says it will take at least a year for them to train the technicians and to develop an assembly line for the vehicle. The Gixxer maker is seriously considering to locally assemble the motorcycle in India to keep a check on costs. The V-Strom 650 will be brought in from Japan as completely knocked down units and assembled in India. The company will take at least two years to locally assemble the V-Strom 650 in India.

The global success of the V-Strom 650 has overwhelmed the company and in fact, it is the V-Strom 650 that is more popular than the V-Strom 1000. Internationally, Suzuki sells the motorcycle in two variants – V-Strom 650 standard and V-Strom 650XT. The 650XT is the range-topping model which gets aluminum rims with stainless-steel spokes and off-road oriented tyres. The Suzuki V-Strom 650 is powered by a 645cc liquid-cooled, V-twin motor that produces 70 HP of power and 66 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

ABS and Traction Control are offered as standard on both the variants. However, Suzuki is yet to confirm whether India will get one of the two variants or both the variants. Expect the V-Strom 650 to be priced in the Rs. 6-7 lakhs price bracket (ex-showroom).

Thanks to the legendary Hayabusa and recent GSX-S series, Suzuki has enjoyed a fairly good presence in the Indian supersport motorcycle space. To cater to adventure-seekers and tourers, Suzuki introduced the V-Strom 1000 ABS in 2014. Priced at Rs. 13.82 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai), this CBU import doesn’t come across as a value proposition but there are no two ways about its sorted nature. Suzuki is expected to replace the current model with the updated 2018 V-Strom 1000XT in September 2017.

The 2018 Suzuki V-Strom 1000XT comes with a host of updates, of which the exterior changes are limited to spoke wheels, new fairing and windscreen. Suspended on a light weight aluminium chassis, the new motorcycle will continue to offer incredible agility and nimble nature of its predecessor. Along with a new wider handlebar, the bike gets hand guards as standard. Optional storage accessories are offered with a single-function key. Suzuki has also integrated Motion Track Braking System to ABS and added combined braking technology as well.

Powered by the same 1037cc liquid-cooled engine that does duty on the current generation, the 2018 Suzuki V-Strom 1000XT will produce 99 BHP of power at 8000 RPM and 103 NM of torque at a rather low 4000 RPM. The parallel-twin motor comes mated to a 6-speed constant mesh transmission. Braking duties are performed by a twin disc setup at the front and single disc brake at the rear. The upright riding posture, typical of adventure tourers, provides the rider enough space and comfort.

The bike comes with inverted telescope forks at the front and a link-type suspension at the rear, which gives it a supple and compliant ride quality. With a tank capacity of 20-litres, the V-Strom 1000 is well suited to long distance touring. Thankfully, the tyres have been updated to Bridgestone Battlewing dual-sport while features such as heated handlebar grips, ABS and traction control are carried forward from the previous version.

The 2018 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 features Motion Track Braking System which relies on the five-axis inertial management unit supplied by Bosch to improve braking efficiency and prevent wheel lockups. It works in sync with the bike’s ABS unit. Expected to be launched by September 2017, the new version is a worthy update to the current model provided Suzuki prices it right.

The 2018 Suzuki V-Strom 1000XT will compete with the likes of BMW R1200GS, Kawasaki Versys 1000, Ducati Multistrada 1200, Triumph Tiger Explorer and the recent adventure motorcycle to go on sale, the Honda Africa Twin.
