GasGas-KTM
It is speculated that the bikes will be based on KTM’s existing products

KTM Industries AG (now called Pierer Mobility AG) has announced the purchase of 60% stakes in Spanish brand GasGas and will use the company’s dealer network to expand its reach into the Spanish market. Sprouting from this merger are 3 new motorcycles to be developed by GasGas. It is speculated that the bikes will be based on KTM’s existing products.

The 3 new models will include 2 roadsters and 1 road-biased adventure tourer. The entry-level roadster model from GasGas will slot in the 250cc segment and might be based on the Duke 250. There will also be an 800 series, likely to be based on the KTM 790 series.

The engine specifications should be identical to the KTM motorcycles including the DOHC, liquid-cooled, 4-valve per cylinder setup. The performance numbers of the quarter-litre model’s engine will be about 31 PS and 24 Nm. The 800 series’ engine, on the other hand, should deliver approximately 105 PS and 87 Nm from its parallel-twin mill.

Coming to the hardware on the motorcycles, it will include inverted front forks, a preload-adjustable rear mono-shock and disc brakes on both wheels along with dual-channel ABS.

The BS6-compliant Duke 125 will get a price hike of around Rs. 8000- 10,000/-

KTM is set to showcase its entire line-up for 2020-2021 at the India Bike Week 2019 that will include updated, BS6-compliant version of the current models. The brand will also be launching the much-anticipated 390 Adventure.

The KTM Duke 250, Duke 390 and the RC 390 will be the first BS6 models that will go on sale. Deliveries are set to begin from 20th December 20 and these bikes will cost around Rs. 15,000/- more. The BS6-compliant Duke 125 will hit the market in January 2020 with a price hike of around Rs. 8000/- to Rs. 10,000/-.

The KTM 390 Adventure was recently unveiled in Euro 5 (BS6) spec with the same power figure i.2 44 PS as the outgoing Duke 390. Though it is common for BS6 bikes to bear a drop in power in India, it is expected that there won’t be any significant power loss on the upcoming KTMs.

It is likely that the 390-based Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 and Vitpilen 401 will be showcased at the motorcycle event as well.

2017 KTM Duke 250 Review
The Duke 250 gets a dual-channel ABS system

KTM had introduced a single-channel ABS unit on the Duke 125 and Duke 200 in the recent past and now the company has launched the Duke 250 ABS, which unlike its smaller siblings, gets a dual-channel ABS unit. The Duke 250 ABS is priced at Rs. 1.94 lakhs (ex-showroom) which translates into a premium of Rs. 14,000/- over the non-ABS version.

The KTM Duke 250 gets switchable ABS which can be turned off completely. However, the rider cannot disengage ABS only at the rear (can be done on Duke 390 Supermoto mode). No other changes have been made to the bike, it continues to be powered by the 248.8cc, liquid-cooled engine that produces 30 HP and 24 Nm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

The Duke 250 sits between the energetic Duke 200 and the frantic Duke 390

Motorcycles are all about performance, especially those with a displacement of 200cc and above and as they say, there is no replacement for displacement. When we pitted the KTM Duke 200 against the Honda CBR250R in a quarter-mile drag race, to our surprise, the Japanese faired bike beat the Katoom. Now the Orange brand has launched the Duke 250 in India which is a stepping stone from the Duke 200 and also its long-term replacement, selling 586 units in September 2017. Priced at a Rs. 30,000/- premium over the Duke 200, the Duke 250 offers a whole lot more, or does it?

Motor Quest: Launch of the supermoto Duke 620, also known as the Duke I, marked the origin of the KTM Duke series in 1994. However, it was the partnership with Bajaj Auto in 2007 which entitled the Austrian manufacturer to dive deep into the sub-400cc segment worldwide. The made-in-India first-gen Duke 250 was not considered for India but two years down the line, KTM took our auto industry by surprise by bringing in the second-gen 2017 Duke 250.

Styling is sharp and quite aggressive when compared to the Duke 200

Styling – Taking design inspiration from the fire-breathing 1290 Super Duke, the Duke 250 comes engulfed in the 2017 Duke 390 skin. Thanks to the superfluous design elements by quarter-litre motorcycle standards, this one will come across as an arresting proposition for posers also. From the burly metal tank to the sculpted tail section, the 2017 Duke 250 carries the persona of its elder sibling really well. All the new-age KTM elements – including the exposed Trellis frame, minimalistic graphics, side-swept exhaust, LED daytime running lights, revised rear-view mirrors, sleek LED indicators and angular tank shrouds – shoehorned into a striking street-fighter design make this motorcycle a masterpiece on our roads.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/33180644922/[/flickr]

Wider rear-view mirrors protrude out to offer sufficient view of the action behind

Unending similarities with the 2017 Duke 390 mean that it passes off as one in the eyes of a casual observer. There are a few differentiators, though. For starters, the headlight unit misses out on the split-design and makes do with a regular halogen lighting setup. The alloy wheels and main frame are finished in a mellowed down shade of black and the use of neon orange has been tastefully applied to the sub-frame and the body panels. Speaking of panels, we were amazed by their overall quality and exemplary fit and finish levels.

The digital LCD console displays a sea of information

Instrument Cluster and Switchgear – Keeping in mind the elitism of fellow 2017 Duke 390 possessors, the company has employed a compact digital console on the Duke 250. This is the same orange-backlit unit we’ve been seeing all these years but comes with the addition of a ‘Kill Switch’ indicator and a real-time fuel efficiency counter. Displaying information is child’s play for this console as it throws out a magnitude of data from time, temperature and gear position to speed, distance to empty and service reminder. Quite aptly, they’ve provided a shift light also since the digital tachometer is pretty difficult to read. While this unit goes well with the theme of the motorcycle, the 5.0-inch TFT cluster from its elder sibling with connectivity options would have been a welcome inclusion. Backlit switchgear is also carried forward from the Duke 200 and we have no complaints with its quality or feel.

The Duke 250 gets black rims and black frame

No one saw this coming as KTM has time and again said that it has no plans to launch the 250cc models (Duke or RC) in India. But out of nowhere, the 2017 KTM Duke 250 was spotted and now it has been launched in India, priced at Rs. 1.73 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). Positioned between the Duke 200 and Duke 390, the Duke 250 offers the best of both worlds as it has good enough grunt for both the city and highway.

The 2017 KTM Duke 250 is powered by a 248.8cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine which is based on the 373.3cc motor that powers the KTM 390 twins. This motor generates 31 HP of power at 9000 RPM and 24 Nm of torque at 7250 RPM, putting it bang against the likes of the Honda CBR250R and Mahindra Mojo.

On the styling front, the Duke 250 looks different from the Duke 200 (which is being sold in India) and the 2017 Duke 390 which has been launched alongside. The bike features black rims but an orange coloured frame while a side mounted exhaust ensures its BS-IV compliant. Although a split headlight is missing, it features LED inserts. The ignition switch has been brought closer to the rider, near the tank which is now bigger at 13.4-litres.

The KTM Duke 250 looks sharp but uses the old instrument cluster which was seen on the first generation KTM Duke models. The bike also misses out on ABS. It is offered in 2 colours – Orange and White. The KTM Duke 250 has been priced at Rs. 1.73 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The 2017 KTM Duke 250 small displacement motorcycle has been spotted in a surprising move by the Austrian two-wheeler major.
2017 Duke 250 Spied
The 2017 KTM Duke 250 has been spied in India right before the KTM launch event

For the European performance motorcycling company KTM, India is a very important market – not just because it is the largest two-wheeler industry by numbers, but also because it has the potential to explode like a pumpkin in some years for the segment where the biking major is a specialist i.e track focused street bikes for affordable pockets. The KTM Duke series and the RC series of bikes are a hoot to ride and look awesome both standing and zooming past. Till now, the KTM bikes were available in only 200cc and 390cc displacement avatars, but it looks like a new member will soon join these machines this coming week.

The 2017 KTM Duke 250, which was at a point of time rejected by the higher-ups to be sold in India, has been spied in all its saree-guard brandishing camouflaged glory, as well as in full production ready avatar in India, right before the launch event of KTM scheduled for 23rd February. The test mule and the production ready model were equipped with MRF Revz-FC1 and Revz-C1 tyres instead of the Metzeler Sportec M5 Interact tyres that are seen on the international model.

Also, ABS was missing from the test mules too and the motorcycles donned the instrument cluster from the outgoing model instead of the Duke 390’s modern LCD display. KTM was expected to launch the new 2017 range of bikes in its event this week but the high chance of the 2017 Duke 250 being introduced in India certainly spices things up a bit.

It is also a possibility that the Duke 250 might as well replace the Duke 200 completely. The 2017 KTM Duke 250 gets a bigger heart than the 200 in the form of a 248.8cc displacement. The international spec model draws 31 BHP of power at 9000 RPM and 24 Nm of torque at 7250 RPM from its single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine and we don’t expect that to change. If launched, the motorcycle might get a premium price tag, higher than the extremely value for money Duke 200. KTM could keep the Duke 200 as it is, without updating it, making for an attractive entry point to the Orange brand.

– The Indian-spec 2017 Duke 250 has been spied in the wild
– The bike is expected to be launched in India on 23rd February 2017
– If launched, it would be a pleasant surprise as KTM had previously refused to launch the bike in India

KTM won’t be launching the 2017 RC 250 and Duke 250 in India.
2017 KTM Duke 250
The Duke 250 is manufactured in India but currently not sold in the country

KTM recently launched the RC 390 and the RC 200 in India and the company also announced about their plans to launch the new Duke 390 by the end of February 2017. But no announcement was made regarding the RC 250 and Duke 250 even though both of them are manufactured at Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant.

The main reason for KTM not planning to launch their 250cc bikes might be that the production cost for the RC 250 and the Duke 250 is a bit higher than that of the Duke 200 and the RC 200, since the bikes share the same platform as that of the RC 390 and Duke 390. The motor used in the Duke 250 and the RC 250 is a 249cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that produces 31 BHP and 24 Nm. This engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

Both the bikes get ABS and slipper-clutch as standard. If the bikes are to be launched here in India it will cost KTM a lot and their profit margins will also come down as they would have to price the bikes between the range of their 200-series and 390-series bikes.

The bikes are currently sold in Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. KTM currently plans to first launch the Duke 390 in India followed by the 390 Adventure that they are currently working on.

The upcoming 2017 KTM Duke 250 was recently revealed and now the specifications of the bike are out. The 2017 KTM Duke 250 gets a 248.8cc, water-cooled, single cylinder, 4-stroke engine that produces 29.5 HP of power at 9000 RPM and 24 Nm of torque at 7250 RPM. The engine is mated to a 6-speed transmission.

The gearbox comes with an anti-hopping clutch. The 4 valves in the cylinder are actuated by 2 overhead camshafts and carbon-coated cam followers. The 2017 KTM Duke 250 comes on a steel trellis frame with a WP suspension at the front and a new swingarm design. The bike also comes with a new exhaust system and dual channel ABS. The Duke also gets a 300 mm disc and a 4-piston caliper.

The styling of the Duke 250 gets inspiration from the Super Duke. However, it misses out on the split headlights. The body panels have a sharp design and the design looks sporty enough. The bike is manufactured in India, but KTM won’t launch it here most probably and it will continue to be exported to other markets.

The KTM Duke and RC 250 continue to boast high power output with sporty riding positions like the bigger models and are equipped with a slipper clutch and ABS as standard.

KTM RC 250 First Ride Indonesia
The RC & Duke 250 use the same mechanicals as the 390, but with a smaller motor

KTM pulled in quite a surprise earlier this year by introducing the Duke and RC 250 that tops the power chart without exceeding the taxation limit applicable in some markets. Sharing all its components with the Duke and RC 390, the models use a downsized 248.8cc single-cylinder motor tuned for 31.3 PS and 24 Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. Now, the folks in Indonesia had a chance to ride the new orange 250 twins much before us folks in India and here is what they think about the Austrian automaker’s newest mass market offerings.

On the outset, the KTM Duke 250 emerges as ergonomically more comfortable over the RC 250 with an upright riding position. However, it is reported that the riding posture feels sportier due to the handlebars when compared to the Honda CBR250R, Kawasaki Ninja 250 and Yamaha R25. In contrast, the fully faired RC 250 is aggressive right from the start with a leaner posture and is more dedicated than the single-cylinder Kawasaki Ninja 250RR Mono. In terms of seat height, the Duke 250 measures 800 mm while the RC 250 sits taller at 820 mm.

The KTM RC 250 is quick around corners and comes with a well tuned suspension from WP while gear shifts are quick with the slipper clutch offered as standard. The source also states that the top speed achieved on the quarter-litre Duke was 142 km/hr while the RC 250 was pushed to 150 km/hr (speedometer indicated) on the Sentul International Circuit, where the bikes were tested. The rider did complain of slight shake on the right foot peg when down shifting. In terms of aesthetics, both models closely resemble their siblings down to the body graphics and are offered with ABS.

Both the KTM Duke and RC 250 are produced in India alongside the 200 and 390 models, and reports are rife that the automaker is considering launching one of the new quarter-litre motorcycles in the domestic market. That said, it is unclear as to which 250 will be arriving in the country going on to replace the outgoing Duke or RC 200 in the automaker’s lineup. Have a preference? The KTM Duke 250 and RC 250 are being shipped from Austria to Indonesia instead of India and have been showcased at the 2015 Indonesia International Auto Show.

KTM RC 250 Duke
Indonesia is the second country after Japan to get the KTM 250 twins

KTM pulled a pleasing surprise earlier this year by revealing the new Duke and RC 250 twins at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. However, it was soon confirmed that the new 250cc models will be sold in selective markets with India and Europe not being one of them, much to our disappoint. Now, adding a new market for the 250cc offerings, KTM has launched the Duke 250 and RC 250 in Indonesia revealing the motorcycles at the ongoing 2015 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS).

Sporting downsized engines powering the 373.2cc Duke and RC 390, the KTM Duke 250 and RC 250 are powered by a 250cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder motor that produces 31.3 PS of power and 24 Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. The bikes also share the same mechanicals as the other models and save for the 250 badging, there is very little that sets both the models apart from larger KTMs. Both the models also sport ABS and slipper clutch as standard with Metzeler tyres wrapped around the multi-spoke alloy wheels.

Incidentally, the KTM Duke and RC 250 are being shipped to Indonesia from Austria instead of India. KTM India manufactures the 250cc models at its facility in Chakan for international markets, but has made it clear in the past that the new 250cc models won’t be making it to Indian showrooms. Launching the 250cc models in India also does not make sense due to the extremely close pricing between the 200cc and 250cc versions that would cannibalise sales of the former.

However, given the high taxation policies for bikes above 250cc in Indonesia, the KTM Duke and RC 250 make a lot of sense offering more bang for the buck and helps create better price difference, being a CBU import. In addition, the automaker has also announced a national racing championship for the RC 250 that will go on the floors next year.

2015 KTM Duke & RC 250 Indonesia Prices (on-road, Jakarta) –

* Duke 250 – 69.5 million Indonesian Rupiah (Rs. 3.31 lakhs)
* RC 250 – 74.5 million Indonesian Rupiah (Rs. 3.55 lakhs)

The KTM Duke 250 and RC 250 promotional video shows the bikes going crazy on the streets of Bangkok. KTM bikes are crazy fun to ride is made evident in the commercial.

KTM RC 250 Duke
The KTM Duke & RC 250 twins won’t be launched in India

We knew it was coming, but KTM still managed to surprise the motorcycle world with the unveiling of the Duke 250 and RC 250 twins in Japan earlier this year. The Austrian bike maker’s newest fighters in the quarter-litre space are ready to take on the world, offering a tad bit more power over the 200 twins from the new 250cc engine while based on the same tried and tested trellis frame. In this latest commercial, the newest KTM twins take to the streets of Thailand, painting it orange.

You see the KTM Duke and RC ‘Two fifties’ going crazy on the streets of Bangkok as they make their way through the concrete jungle evading the traffic on flyovers, highways, tunnels and the occasional country roads to arrive at the destination. Both the bikes showcase their overwhelming handling prowess on the roads as they change lanes, take sharp turns, while doing wheelies on the street. Knowing its siblings the Duke 200/390 and RC 200/390, the 250s are as much powerful as they look while offering the fun quotient for city and highway rides.

Doing a quick reminder on the figures, the KTM Duke and RC 250 draw power from a 250cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled motor that produces 31.3 PS and 24 Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. The 250 twins come equipped with ABS and slipper clutch while the substantial increase in power strikes the right balance between city and highway riding when compared to the city friendly Duke 200 and the highway friendly Duke 390. While the Duke and RC 250 won’t be launched in India, they are produced at the KTM-Bajaj facility in Chakan and exported to several South East Asian and certain European markets. Check out the commercial below and let us know what you feel about it.

Like we predicted earlier, KTM has begun exporting the Duke 250 and RC 250 from India to other countries and these bikes won’t be launched in India.

KTM RC 250 Duke
The 250cc bikes are being exported to Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Turkey, Thailand

The KTM Duke 250 and RC 250 created a lot of buzz when they were first revealed in Tokyo. We were left wondering what is the point of single-cylinder 250cc bike when the company already has 200cc and 390cc variants available. Before the actual unveil, we were hoping for the new bikes to be twin-cylinder ones but then again that was not the case. These bikes are powered by a 248.8cc engine that churns out 31.3 PS of power and 24 Nm of torque. The engine is based on the one that powers the Duke and RC 390s. So KTM has finally begun exporting the bikes from India to other countries.

The KTM Duke and RC 250 are made in India but they will be sold in other countries. These bikes won’t be launched here since there is no point in selling 200cc and 250cc bikes side by side when we know it’ll be difficult to price them appropriately. The Duke and RC 250 are being exported to countries like Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Austria, Turkey and Thailand. The cost of these bikes seems to be quite similar to the Duke and RC 200 and hence we think its wise of KTM to not launch them in India. However, it might happen in the future that the Austrian company decides to replace the 200cc twins with the 250cc models.

In countries like Japan and Malaysia, there is a huge market for 250cc bikes and people in these countries usually prefer Japanese bikes more but they don’t really mind trying out other brands too. While Honda and Kawasaki continue to sell the CBR250R and Ninja 250 respectively in these countries, KTM has attacked their market with the 250cc twins. KTM could replace the 200 twins with the 250 twins in the next generation of the single-cylinder Duke and RC bikes.

The unveil of the 250cc KTM bikes at Tokyo recently got everyone very excited but these motorcycles aren’t set for an India launch. They won’t be even sold in Europe.

KTM RC 250 Duke
The 250cc single-cylinder KTM twins are made in India but won’t be launched here

The quarter-litre segment is a sweet displacement category in certain Asian countries like Japan, Indonesia and Thailand, that’s the reason KTM has developed a new 248.8cc engine which has found its way into the new RC 250 and Duke 250. This motor generates 31.3 PS and 24 Nm, being based on the larger 373.2cc single-cylinder missile. Post the unveil, everyone was excited that KTM will launch these machines in India as they are made by Bajaj Auto at their Chakan facility. But neither the RC 250, nor the Duke 250 will be launched in India because they are for markets whose taxation structure favours 250cc bikes.

In fact, KTM won’t be launching the Duke 250 and RC 250 in Europe either, also they won’t make it to the States. So all those having hope of seeing the 250cc KTM in India, you will be disappointed. The obvious reason for not launching the RC 250 and Duke 250 in India is the lack of price point to position them. The gap between the 200 and 390 KTM models is so narrow that a 250 can’t be put in between. Maybe the next generation Duke 200 and RC 200 won’t come and instead only the Duke 250 becomes the entry-level model where the Duke 125 isn’t sold. The next generation of the single-cylinder, sub-500cc KTM Dukes are due in 2017.

Just recently a rumour of a 250cc KTM Enduro being launched in India surfaced. This is not going to happen because KTM CEO Stefan Pierer has made it very clear that the next models to roll out of Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant from KTM would be Husqvarna motorcycles (the Vitpilen and Svartpilen) in 2017. Work on a lower capacity Adventure bike didn’t reach much further as the underpinnings on the Dukes (trellis frame) isn’t apt for an Enduro model. KTM’s focus is on developing middle-weight bikes in the 500-800cc twin-cylinder space for which Bajaj Auto has been given complete responsibility.
