2021 Kia Carnival Dashboard
New interiors are dominated by dual digital screens

2021 Kia Carnival interior has been revealed and the design of the fourth generation model’s insides is a compete departure to that of the current car on sale.

Kia claims the design is based on the interior design concept named ‘Spatial Talents’ and promises improved cabin quality.

The obvious difference is the presence of two digital displays on the wrap-around dashboard like in new Mercedes models, along with a new steering wheel.

One screen is for the driver’s instrument cluster, the other is a touchscreen infotainment system and both are 12.3-inches in size with haptic touch controls.

There is a similar panel further below the centre console for the climate control system, while at its base, one can find the shift-by-wire dial for the transmission.

The fourth-generation Kia Carnival has 30 mm longer wheelbase (up to 3090 mm) and 10 mm wider body (up to 1995 mm).

The overall length of the new Carnival has increased by 40 mm to 5155 mm, with a 30 mm longer rear overhang (up to 1130 mm).

Depending upon the market, the Carnival will offer 3- or 4-row seating configurations, with space for 7, 9 or 11 occupants in total.

The 7-seat configuration model will get reclining captain seats for second-row occupants, with adjustable backrests, armrests and legrests.

Storage-wise, the second-row occupants have access to USB chargers, storage nets and a new storage drawer in the base of the rear console.

Exterior of the MPV was recently shown in pictures. There is a big grille at the front that houses the low beam headlight and next to it are DRLs and high beam units.

The MPV gets sliding rear doors, new alloy wheels, blackened A, B and C pillars, while the rear profile has a single unit tail light with revisions made to the tail gate and bumper.

The 2021 Kia Carnival is due on-sale in Korea in the third quarter of 2020 and its India launch is expected in 2022.

2021 Kia Carnival Design
The new model is longer than its predecessor having a longer wheelbase

2021 Kia Carnival is finally revealed after all the teasers and leaks. The first pictures of the new MPV exhibit their latest design language. It now looks more of an SUV with the new styling.

The front profile is dominated by a huge grille which gets a unique criss-cross diamond shaped detailing. The DRLs have a sharp design too accommodating high beam headlight unit on the outside and low beam unit integrated in the grille.

There is anew sharp bumper with chrome elements to add to the premium touch. The hood is longer and the overall stance is more upright, lending an SUV shape. On the side profile you’ll notice new multi-spoke alloy wheel design. The A, B and C pillar are blackened out to give it a floating roof aesthetic. However, the C pillar also gets a matte aluminium finish to cut the bulk of the rear.

The rear door is a sliding unit for easy ingress and egress for all the passengers, same like the current model. The rear profile is now sleeker with a single unit tail light. The tail gate and the bumper is new too.

Kia hasn’t revealed the interior yet but it will have an all-new design too with modern tech and styling. It is likely to come with a new range topping luxury oriented 4-seater variant as well.

Specifications will be revealed soon but we expect Kia to offer a 2.2-litre diesel and 2.5-litre turbo petrol engine options. India launch is expected in 2022 and not before that.

After the immense success of the Seltos, Kia is all set to disrupt the MPV segment with its spacious & feature-loaded Carnival

Kia, one of the biggest car companies in the world, entered the Indian market with the Seltos. The Seltos became a runaway success and now it is amongst the top-selling midsize SUVs in the country. Overwhelmed by the Seltos’ success, Kia is aiming to diversify their portfolio and their next car is the Carnival. Although an MPV, it is unlike anything else we have seen before. Available as a 6, 7 and 9-seater, the Carnival is slotting between the Innova and more expensive MPVs like the Mercedes-Benz V-Class and Toyota’s upcoming Vellfire. Will Carnival create a segment of its own and will it lure buyers away from more conventional alternatives like luxury sedans and SUVs? We find out.

Motor Quest: In Kia’s diverse global portfolio, the Carnival is hardly all-new. What we see here is the third-generation model introduced globally in 2015. The ‘Carnival’ nameplate has been around since 1998. The Carnival is also known as ‘Sedona’ in some markets. The India-spec model is a mid-cycle facelift and Kia says it gets more equipment than the model sold overseas.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/49412950933/[/flickr]

At over 5-meters in length, the Carnival is strikingly long

Exteriors – The Carnival boasts of a typical mini-van design. However, in India mini-vans weren’t really popular, so the design appears rather novel. You get a mono-volume shape with a relatively stubby bonnet and the long body following it. In fact, the length is a highlight of the Carnival as it is a little over 5-meters long. The front features the now familiar ‘Tiger-nose’ grille with swept-back headlamps. Kia has made generous use of chrome, especially in the top-spec Limousine variant, which we took for a test drive.

[flickr size=”center” float=”medium”]http://www.flickr.com/photos/motorbeam/49413623672/[/flickr]

The MPV gets automatic sliding doors

A generous use of chrome and some smooth flowing lines give the Carnival an understated yet upmarket look

From the side, the sliding door mechanism cannot go unnoticed. The long footprint gives the Carnival a stately appeal. The polished alloys and subtle chrome garnishes do make the MPV look quite premium. We like that Kia has not over-styled the Carnival and the only design experiments include smooth flowing lines and the smartly done kink for the rear quarter glass. From the rear, again, its simplicity that rules. Despite the straightforward approach to design, the Carnival looks sophisticated and fitting to the class. It gets an automatic tailgate that can open and close at the touch of a button. In case your hands are full and the key fob is in your pocket, the tailgate opens up to ease things up for you.

Kia’s second car in India will be the Kia Carnival

One has to appreciate Korean automaker Kia for entering such a slowdown industry with a bang. The recently launched Seltos has been the top-selling mid-size SUV in India for 2 consecutive months. The brand is now gearing up to launch its second model, the Kia Carnival MPV in India. Set to rival the segment leader Toyota Innova Crysta, the Carnival will be showcased at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo in February.

With the Carnival, Kia wants to up the luxury benchmark set by the Innova Crysta as the model on offer in India is likely to be more premium than the one sold abroad. Expect features such as a large sunroof, electrically sliding door, leather seats, 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto among other features. The luxury MPV shall offer a 7 or 8-seat layout with engine duties done by a 2.2-litre diesel with an automatic transmission.

Kia’s 3rd product for our market will be a compact-SUV codenamed QYI (also known as QY internally). The car will have its world debut in India. It will be initially made for the domestic market while exports might follow suit. It will compete in the hottest compact-SUV segment, against the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport. A concept or pre-production model might break cover at the 2020 Expo with a market introduction likely in the second half of 2020.

In terms of size and stature, the Kia Carnival at a length of 5115 mm, breadth of 1985 mm and height of 1740 mm will be 380 mm longer and 155 mm wider than the Innova Crysta slotting it a segment above the latter. Even the wheelbase at 3060 mm is 310 mm more than the Toyota. A refreshing change from Innova’s rear-wheel-drive, the Carnival will be built on a front-wheel-mechanism.

It’s expected to bear a low slung profile and electric sliding doors will ease ingress and egress from the vehicle. Gear up to sit a little low due to the profile and a lot of legroom with extendable leg rests due to the stretched out length of the vehicle. Expect two 10.1-inch screens at the rear and a large touchscreen infotainment with Kia’s UVO car connectivity system. Power adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, two sunroofs, three-zone climate control and a plethora of safety features will also be offered.

The Kia Carnival MPV is expected to have a spacious three-row seating arrangement without affecting the luggage space in the car. Some variants might have a motorised third row. The India-bound Carnival will run on a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine producing 202 HP and 441 Nm of peak torque. While a 6-speed manual gearbox will be on offer, a 6-speed automatic is likely to follow suit.

The Kia Carnival will be tagged around Rs. 23-26 lakhs despite being partly assembled in India. The engine will be imported as a fully built unit. Along with Kia Carnival, the Tata Buzzard (7-seater Harrier), Mahindra Marazzo W10 and MG Hector 7-seater will rival the hot-selling Toyota Innova Crysta in the next one year.

Kia Carnival Review

Car Tested: 2019 Kia Carnival; Road Test No. 1062; Test Location: Delhi NCR

Price OTR Mumbai: Rs. 30 lakhs (est.)

The Carnival is a full-size people mover with acres of space and lots of features

The MPV segment in India has slowly started to stand taller and taller. Until a few months back, we just had two players dominating, the Maruti Ertiga at the lower end and the Toyota Innova at the higher end of the price spectrum. Now though, we have the Mahindra Marazzo which has been priced consciously between the Ertiga and the Innova Crysta and the Mahindra MPV has been received quite well by the Indian audience but that shouldn’t let us not look at the fact that there is still no proper rival to the Toyota Innova Crysta. Talking of which, the car we’re sampling today could just be that. Ladies and gentlemen say hello to the Kia Carnival.

Motor Quest: The Kia Carnival was showcased at the Auto Expo last year and is currently in its third generation avatar. The full-size MPV is available only in front wheel drive configuration and is also sold as the Sedona and Grand Carnival in some international markets.

In terms of size, the Kia Carnival is longer and wider than the Innova

Exteriors – In terms of looks, the Kia Carnival will come across as a modern, sophisticated and an urban MPV. The front fascia looks purposeful with the brand’s customary ‘Tiger Nose’ grille and the hi-tech projector headlights with LED DRLs. At the side is where the MPV design traits start becoming more prominent with the sheer length and the large windows. However, there’s a unique touch here that prospective Innova buyers would like, the sliding rear doors. They not only make the ingress and egress comfortable but at the press of a button they automatically slide in or out, so less effort there! The rear end looks smart as well as sporty courtesy those LED tail-lights and roof mounted spoiler.

The cabin of the MPV is smartly laid-out, good-quality materials used

Interiors – Get inside the Kia Carnival and what you will immediately appreciate is the sense of space. The cabin is made with good quality materials and the piano black inserts on the dashboard, steering wheel and the door pads uplift the premium appeal of the car. The 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel is identical to other Kia cars we’ve driven before but the instrument console with a MID display in between looks a tad bit sportier. Taking centre stage in the cabin of the MPV is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with all sorts of smartphone connectivity options along with navigation. Our test car was specced with a host of features like cruise control, engine start/stop, passive entry, voice commands, automatic climate control, roof-mounted AC vents in all rows, heated and ventilated front seats and electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs.

The Korean MPV has a 311 mm longer wheelbase than its arch rival

Unlike the Innova, the Kia Carnival is a very practical MPV which has space for the occupants and all their luggage

The space on offer is plenty. The front and second row seats are comfortable and there’s enough under-thigh support, leg room, headroom and shoulder room. The third-row seats are reasonably comfortable but lack under-thigh support, still there is enough room for adults here. We were a tad bit skeptical about the roof-mounted AC vents but they do their job very well, they chill the entire cabin in no time. The boot space even with the third-row of seats up is very huge and in case you have some house moving duties, fold down the second row of seats and you get access to 2220-litres of cargo space!
