Bajaj Auto Twinner Trademark
Looks like Bajaj could soon field a twin-cylinder bike in the mid-capacity segment

The Bajaj Twinner trademark could be for a new model set to use KTM’s 490cc motor

Bajaj Auto has received the trademark for the title ‘Twinner’ in India. The maker of Pulsar motorcycles had filed the application for the same in May 2020.

Now, twinner simply means “one that bears twins” and we believe the moniker could be used for an upcoming 2-cylinder, mid-capacity motorcycle from Bajaj.

It is well-known that Bajaj has been working with its long-standing partner KTM to develop a range of twin-cylinder motorcycles with an engine capacity of around 490cc.

The first 490 model from the Austrian brand will make global debut this year and it will carry the Duke moniker. The KTM 490 Adventure will follow suit, while RC 490 is also in the making and so are the enduro and a supermoto bikes making use of the same engine.

Bajaj Dominar 400 Touring Accessories
Bajaj currently makes use of KTM’s 200cc and 373cc single-cylinder engines

Bajaj will be manufacturing these motorcycles in India and like it has done in the past, the Dominar maker should introduce mid-capacity models using KTM’s new 490cc engine.

Thus, the Bajaj Twinner trademark could well be used for a motorcycle making around 50 BHP. Of course, the Indian firm will price what will effectively be its new flagship, if at all it arrives, more aggressively than KTM.

One can only speculate so much for now and Bajaj’s partnership with Triumph to produce mid-capacity bikes which will bear fruit in fiscal year 2023, cannot be ignored either.

Bajaj is creating the manufacturing capacity it needs for the future

The new EV Factory, says Bajaj will also produce vehicles for export

Bajaj Auto has announced that it has commenced work at its new EV factory at Akurdi in Pune, today. This facility is being built at an investment of Rs. 300 crores.

Expected to be operational from June next year, the new EV factory, Bajaj says will see an additional Rs. 250 crores pumped into it by the automaker’s vendors.

Spread over half a million square feet, the upcoming factory will employ around 800 personnel and have a production capacity of 5 lakh EVs per annum.

Co-located with Bajaj’s research and development (R&D) centre, the EV factory will have the latest robotic and automated manufacturing systems including for logistics and material handling, fabrication and painting, assembly and quality assurance.

Bajaj Chetak EV Features
Bajaj is the number 1 motorcycle exporter of the nation

Bajaj says its Akurdi facility will be a hub for design, development and manufacturing of a complete range of EVs. It is to be noted that the site was where the original Chetak scooter factory was located.

Managing Director, Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj has said with the exception of a new internal combustion engine (ICE) platform that is under development at present, the company is focusing all of its R&D toward creating EVs.

Terming this the Bajaj 3.0, he said the company’s investment in Akurdi for the EV factory should help “leapfrog us into a market leading position in EVs in India and overseas.”

When the EV plant is up and running, it will be Bajaj Auto’s fifth manufacturing facility

Bajaj Auto is likely to make 2-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) models at its Akurdi plant in Pune, which has been unused since 2007.

The first-ever manufacturing plant of the firm is spread over 160 acres and is currently the home of Bajaj’s corporate centre, purchase and sales operations and, chiefly, research and development (R&D).

Executive Director of Bajaj Auto, Rakesh Sharma, has revealed that Akurdi is the top contender to host the new Bajaj EV plant, adding that a confirmation in this regard will come in a couple of months’ time.

“…for the fifth plant, one of the locations which is very attractive is Akurdi itself. We have 160 acres here. We could also look at Waluj (Maharashtra), where we have a huge space. But we feel that Akurdi is a natural space,” Sharma has said.

Bajaj EV Plant
Bajaj has decided it best to have a separate facility for manufacturing EVs

Moreover, according to Bajaj’s executive director, the assessment of layout, logistics and vendor requirement, among other things, is currently being made and once it is done with, the investment required for the new plant would be calculated.

Bajaj is making swift decisions with regard to entering the EV space with all its might. In July this year, its board of directors approved the incorporation of a new wholly owned subsidiary.

The new EV brand, which is yet unnamed, would be retailing hybrid and electric vehicles for the 2-, 3- and light 4-wheeler segments. Further, Bajaj is working with Husqvarna on at least 2 electric 2-wheelers.

The maker of the Chetak electric scooter is known for its partnerships with other automotive giants and Sharma has revealed that a separate partnership for its EV brand “depends on how the market unfolds.”

Bajaj Pulsar 250F Launch
From 2021 November to 2022 November, Bajaj plans to introduce all-new Pulsars

Bajaj Auto will launch the Pulsar 250F in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original Pulsar

Baja Auto is set to launch the Pulsar 250F in November this year, on the 20th anniversary of the original Pulsar.

Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj, has recently revealed that in November this year, Bajaj will launch the all-new Pulsar platform and will start with the biggest Pulsar it has ever made.

“…that platform will, over the next 12 months work its way down all the way to the smallest Pulsars that we make. So, that is our biggest product move in the near future,” Bajaj revealed.

The head of Bajaj Auto also said it aims to electrify its current brands, while doing full justice to its current 2- and 3-wheeler business and defend its success.

It is well-known that Bajaj Auto is in the process of forming a wholly owned electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary and the managing director of the the firm has revealed why it made the decision to launch a separate EV brand.

Despite being one of the early entrants into the electric scooter market, Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj says, might not have the “most appropriate top management to lead this company forward into the electric space.”

In July, the board of directors of the automaker had approved incorporation of a new wholly owned sub-brand with a proposed authorised capital of Rs. 100 crores.

A statement from the company said the new EV subsidiary will help Bajaj Auto venture into the manufacturing of electric and hybrid 2-, 3- and 4-wheelers.

2021 Bajaj Chetak Premium Indigo Metallic
The firm wants to expand the presence of Chetak from 3 to 25 cities by year-end

Rajiv Bajaj said the new EV sub-brand was is being formed due to lessons learnt from the past. He said although the firm was the most successful maker of scooters between the 60s and 80s, it lost out in the motorcycle market in the 90s.

Then, with the launch of the first-generation Pulsar in 2001, Bajaj Auto 2.0 was born and from then on the firm essentially became a motorcycle company, said Rajiv Bajaj.

In effect, the firm is forming a new sub-brand for EVs to not be caught napping like in the 90s once again. Bajaj believes it is not just the technology that may change in the future, but everything around it, be it design, pricing and even the business model.

This is why Rajiv Bajaj believes the firm’s existing talent, even in the top management, including him, “may not be best placed to make the most of this opportunity.” He also added that there might be a need for a different kind of talent across functions in the transition to electrification.

He said the existing company is not short on talent, but rather, it is in a situation where its own success becomes a hurdle in striking the right partnerships.

Which is why Bajaj had to create a new entity “which gives us the flexibility to bring in the talent we need to…strike the partnerships we need…So that we are not left behind in this transition,” he noted.

Bajaj EV Sub-Brand
This is a bold move from Bajaj

The new Bajaj EV sub-brand will cater to the 2-, 3- and 4-wheeler categories

Bajaj Auto has revealed that it will be forming a new electric vehicle (EV) sub-brand which will be wholly owned by the automaker.

The largest 2-wheeler exporter of the nation had on Thursday informed Bombay Stock Exchange that it will be forming a separate wholly owned subsidiary.

Its board of directors had approved incorporation of a new wholly owned sub-brand at a meeting held on Thursday.

A statement from Bajaj Auto reveals that the sub-brand will “leverage the growth opportunities in the evolving mobility space” and will help the firm “venture into the manufacturing of electric and hybrid vehicles.”

These new electric and hybrid vehicles will cater to the 2-wheeler, 3-wheeler and 4-wheeler category, says Bajaj, adding that the name of the entity is being finalised.

To have a proposed authorised capital of Rs. 100 crores, the new Bajaj EV sub-brand should sell the firm’s pure-electric models that are under development.

The company had already stated that it will launch its electric 3-wheelers in the second half (H2) of financial year 2021-22 (FY22).

Moreover, the automaker is also readying an electric version of the Qute along with an electric light commercial vehicle.

Bajaj Qute Video Review
The Qute is going to be a pure-electric model soon

While it is unknown, the new subsidiary could also take care of the manufacture of KTM and Husqvarna electric motorcycles at its new manufacturing facility which is being set up next to its existing factory in Chakan.

The EV race seems to be picking up speed in India and with the advent of Ola Electric into the electric 2-wheeler space, things have changed dramatically.

Ather has announced it will look at producing a scooter with a sub-Rs. 1 lakh price tag, while Hero has partnered with Gogoro to launch electric scooters in India.

So what will Bajaj’s EV sub-brand be called? This might be pushing it too far, but could Bajaj’s new electric subsidiary be called the Chetak?

Considering the fact that Harley-Davidson made the LiveWire electric motorcycle into a separate brand, it would not be surprising to see the same happen here since the Chetak is a popular name in the country.

Bajaj Caliber Trademark
Could this bike be based on the Platina 110 or could it have a 125cc heart?

Bajaj Auto had filed the trademark application for the Caliber in March

Remember the Kawasaki Bajaj Caliber 115? The trademark of the ‘Hoodibaba’ bike’s title has been received by Bajaj, indicating that it might be launched in the Indian market in the future.

Originally launched in the late 90s and discontinued in the noughties, the Kawasaki Bajaj Caliber 115 was a fairly successful motorcycle that was developed by taking the Bajaj 4S as the base.

It had a 111.6cc air-cooled motor which made around 9.5 HP and propelled the motorcycle to a top speed of 102 km/hr.

Now, the Bajaj Caliber trademark states the title can be used for 2-wheelers and electric vehicles, among others. But, it is most likely that the name will be used for a combustion engine bike.

And what engine could it have? Will it be a 115cc motor borrowed from the Platina 110? Or could it have a 125cc engine borrowed from the Pulsar 125?

Kawasaki Bajaj Caliber 115
The original was known for being a workhorse

We think that the Bajaj Caliber will most likely be a 125cc product, since TVS had trademarked the Fiero 125 name in November last year.

Both are well-known names from the past and them going head-to-head will be a rather interesting thing to watch, provided that both bikes are put on sale at the same time in the near future.

In May, we posted a video titled “6 Bikes We Wish Made A Comeback!” in which the Kawasaki Bajaj Caliber 115 was featured. Now, it turns out Bajaj has trademarked the title and we could not be more pleased. Take a look at the video below –

Bajaj Freerider Trademark
Bajaj’s electric bike could share its mechanicals with the Husqvarna E-Pilen

The trademark application for the Bajaj Freerider moniker has been applied recently

Bajaj has filed a trademark application for the Freerider moniker in India. Could it be that the bike manufacturer aims to use the title for its first electric motorcycle?

It is well-known that Bajaj and KTM have co-developed low voltage electric 2-wheeler architectures and the Indian automaker is expected to launch electric motorcycles, following the Chetak, in the near future.

While, the industry is expecting Bajaj to introduce its own version of the Husqvarna E-Pilen, the firm has gone ahead and trademarked the Freerider title for use in India.

The name reminds one of the KTM Freeride E-XC, a lightweight electric bike with an 18 kW (24.5 HP) electric motor making 42 Nm of maximum torque.

KTM Freeride E-XC
It is unlikely that Bajaj will launch an electric bike based on this KTM model

However, the odds of Bajaj making an electric adventure motorcycle before launching a road-going version, due to the ADV segment being rather small in India, are very slim.

It would be more likely to be based on the E-Pilen which has 100 km range and 10.73 HP on tap. That bike’s frame, suspension and brakes should be carried over as well.

Nonetheless, if at all Bajaj plans to make use of the KTM Freeride E-XC’s powertrain, we would not be ones to complain. The battery pack, a 3.9 kWh unit, though would limit range to urban commutes alone.

In terms of styling, the electric motorcycle, for which the Bajaj Freerider trademark has been filed, no matter what category it is from, should come with fresh design.

Only an official statement from Bajaj can put rest to speculations, about the product which will be called the Freerider.

]]>
Bajaj Fluir Trademark
The possibility of it being an electric motorbike cannot be dismissed

Trademark applications filed by Bajaj Auto for Fluir and Fluor titles have been uncovered, leading to speculations that these monikers could be used for the brand’s upcoming electric 2-wheelers.

Bajaj sells an electric scooter, the Chetak, and since it is poised to manufacture electric motorcycles for its partner brands in the future, it makes sense to assume that the firm will also sell varied versions of such EVs under its own branding.

The Bajaj Fluir trademark (and that of the Fluor) states that the title could be used for motorcycles, scooters and electric vehicles, among other vehicle types, further providing a strong basis for speculations about a future Bajaj electric motorcycle.

Although the Fluir and Fluor monikers could be used by the brand for its petrol-powered 2-wheelers, its range has several established brands already, and adding more models without discontinuing some could work against the firm’s intentions.

If one would have to guess, the best bet would be on Bajaj using either 1 of the Fluir and Fluor titles for a motorcycle that could have similar specifications to that of the Husqvarna E-Pilen.

Husqvarna’s first electric urban commuter with come with a small swappable battery pack capable of proving 100 km range on a single charge. It will have a 10.73 HP (8 kW) electric motor.

However, all these are speculations at the moment and only time will let Bajaj Auto’s intentions on using the 2 monikers be known to the automotive world.

To those who would like to know, fluir is a Spanish word meaning ‘to flow’ or ‘to run’, while fluor is a chemistry term applied to denote minerals containing the chemical element fluorine.

Of the 2 titles trademarked by the automaker, Fluor sounds a bit better

Bajaj Electric 3-Wheeler Launch
The firm should have launched its first electric 3-wheeler 2 years ago

Bajaj Auto will launch its electric 3-wheeler products in the second half (H2) of financial year 2021-22 (FY22) and is also working on an electric version of the Qute at present.

Had things gone to plan, the Bajaj electric 3-wheeler launch would have happened in 2019, followed by the introduction of the Chetak electric scooter.

But, the Chetak became the first electric vehicle from the brand when it was launched in January 2020. While shortage of battery cells did hamper the launch of the brand’s electric 3-wheelers last year, a sudden consumer shift towards personal mobility would not have helped matters had the firm launched any such models in 2020.

However, with schools reopening in 2021 along with offices and commercial spaces getting back to their earlier ways, the 3-wheeler segment leader does not want to waste any time in introducing its electric 3-wheelers.

It is likely that the brand will first introduce its electric auto rickshaws, followed by the electric LCV and the electric Qute, which is also under development.

Currently, Bajaj is testing prototypes of the above and is working towards addressing range anxiety and profitability for drivers, while also focusing on reducing costs.

Apart from Bajaj, TVS too is set to enter the segment, which saw 6.3 lakh units get sold in FY19, with an electric 3-wheeler in FY22.

COVID-19 has played spoilsport in the plans the 2 firms had (picture used for representation)

Due to COVID-19-related disruptions, the launch of the first Bajaj-Triumph bike may get pushed to 2023, MD of Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj has hinted.

Bajaj Auto entered a partnership with premium bike manufacturer Triumph Motorcycles to produce middleweight motorcycles for the Indian and overseas markets.

The first motorcycle to be made and subsequently launched under the partnership will be a Triumph model which will be priced under Rs. 2 lakhs.

According to Rajiv Bajaj, development of several Triumph products for the middleweight segment has been delayed owing to COVID-19.

Most of the development for the products created under the partnership will be done in India and they will be manufactured by Bajaj with up to 99 percent localisation, as is the case with the Bajaj-KTM products.

Due to delays in development, Rajiv says he is unsure if they will be ready for the first Bajaj-Triumph bike launch in 2022, adding that it will more likely be in 2023.

Further, Rajiv Bajaj has noted that his firm will not only be responsible for the Indian market when it comes to marketing and sales of Triumph motorcycles it manufactures.

Instead, Bajaj will also oversee the retail of Triumph bikes in some export markets including neighbouring nations in the subcontinent, Asia and Africa, among others.

Excelsior-Henderson Bajaj Trademark
The trademark application from Bajaj Auto

Ever heard of a 2-wheeler brand named Excelsior-Henderson? Nope? Well, it is an American brand that has had a troubled past and Bajaj Auto is likely going to revive it.

The Indian auto giant, having purchased the rights to the brand, has applied for trademark rights in several nations to use the Excelsior-Henderson name and logo on motorcycles, parts and clothing.

Before we go any further, a history lesson is a must. Back in the early 20th century when new automobile firms were cropping up like crazy, much like EV brands of today, Excelsior and Henderson started life as separate entities.

While Excelsior began building litre-class V-twins from as early as 1910, Henderson was more interested in making inline 4-cylinder bikes. Both firms were brought by Schwinn, a bicycle firm, and merged to become Excelsior-Henderson.

Both high-end brands continued to make products separately, but operations were shut down in 1931 due to the American Great Depression.

An attempt was made in the 1990s to bring the entity back and sustain it. A Super-X cruiser with a 1386cc V-twin heart was developed by 1998 and even 1950 units of it got sold. But, by 1999, Excelsior-Henderson went bust once again.

The Harley-Davidson rival was thought to have been resigned to the annals of history books and nobody was interested in the brand when rights to its use and patents came up for auction in 2018.

But, it looks like Bajaj was watching and it has silently bought those rights and patents. An official announcement, expected to be made soon, will clear things up.

Why has Bajaj went and bought a long-dormant American cruiser bike manufacturer? Well, we can only think that it is to take on Royal Enfield which seems to be an unstoppable force at the moment.

If we know Bajaj from its keen partnership with KTM, it is evident that the firm has the might to make a firm very successful. We might find a new cruiser motorcycle under the E-H name heading our way in the coming years.

The new facility will enable the firm to meet rise in demand

Bajaj Auto, has announced that its upcoming manufacturing plant will be set up in Maharashtra at an investment of Rs. 650 crores.

The firm has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State government to build its new facility that will come up next to the firm’s existing factory at Chakan, near Pune.

Expected to get completed and commence production in 2023, the factory will produce the Chetak electric scooter and 2-wheelers of KTM, Husqvarna and the Bajaj-Triumph alliance.

The exact production capacity the new plant will boast of is not known, but it is expected to have the ability to produce more than, or equal to, the number of vehicles the existing factory in Chakan can roll out in a year.

At present, Bajaj’s Chakan facility can produce around 1.08 lakh 2-wheelers a year and considering the growth KTM has been witnessing on a global scale of late, Bajaj is soon expected to increase the plant’s production capacity to 2 lakh units.

Last year, KTM’s worldwide sales stood at 2,80,099 units. By 2022, the Austrian brand, in which Bajaj has 48 percent stake, wants to clock 4 lakh units.

At the moment, barring the upcoming 2-wheelers from the Bajaj-Triumph alliance, which are expected to make their debut in 2022, the Chakan facility rolls out all the other vehicles that will be manufactured at the upcoming plant.

It is most likely that the new facility will give prime importance to manufacturing electric 2-wheelers such as the Chetak, its Husqvarna derivative and the E-Pilen e-motorcycle, among an array of future products.

Interestingly, Bajaj has made this announcement at a time when its rivals, chiefly Honda and Suzuki, have decided to take things slow with regard to new investments.

However, the largest 2-wheeler maker, Hero MotoCorp, has announced it will invest Rs. 10,000 crores towards new manufacturing facilities and products over the next 5 to 7 years.

Manufacturing of Chetak might take place elsewhere in the nation

Bajaj Auto is contemplating moving its EV manufacturing line out of Maharashtra and is considering Bengaluru, Delhi and Hyderabad as possible sites.

Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj, has said that the company wants to set up a dedicated plant for EV manufacturing with a capacity of 5 lakh vehicles.

Although Maharashtra would always be the first choice, according to Rajiv Bajaj, the company plans to move its EV line elsewhere due to recent developments.

The issue is that the Maharashtra government wants the company to hand back a significant portion of the land that it allocated for Bajaj EV manufacturing plant or pay a whole lot more for that land.

That is because there have been delays in Bajaj developing the land in terms of a constructing a factory.

Rajiv Bajaj expressed his disappointed with regard to the State government’s move and stated that instead of supporting his firm, “the Maharashtra government wants to levy a penalty on us because we were admittedly a little late”.

Word has it that Bajaj’s EV line might move to Delhi, Karnataka or Telangana, since Rajiv Bajaj has been quoted saying that he finds the recently released EV policies (of the Union and State governments) encouraging.

For example, the Delhi EV Policy 2020 offers electric vehicle buyers financial incentives in addition to the Centre’s incentives and the government there recently waived road tax and registration fees.

Although it has only one electric 2-wheeler, the Chetak, on sale at the moment (600 units sold so far in this fiscal), Bajaj plans to add new EVs to its portfolio and it will also manufacture upcoming EVs from KTM and Husqvarna brands.

The Dominar 400 remains a superb option for the price even after the hikes

Following the hike trend, Bajaj has hiked the prices of the Pulsar NS 160 and the Dominar 400 again. Both motorcycles have already received many price hikes in 2020, and it seems that Bajaj doesn’t plan on stopping.

The Bajaj Pulsar NS 160 is one of the most capable 150cc segment bikes in the market today, as it offers good features and performance at a good price. But with repetitive hikes, it’s now the third costliest bike in the class after the Suzuki Gixxer and the Honda X-Blade.

The latest price hike makes the bike dearer by about Rs. 1500/-. While it doesn’t seem much, if you take into account all the hikes that the BS6 NS 160 has received and compare it to the BS4 prices, it becomes significant.

Overall, the total price hike including the switch from BS4 to BS6 rounds up the number to about Rs. 15,000/-. This is about 15% of the cost of the bike itself, which is a pretty big number.

Moving on to Bajaj’s flagship bike, the Dominar 400 has also become dearer by Rs. 1500/-. This is the second hike for the Dominar in consecutive months. This rounds up the total price hike of the Dominar to about Rs. 8000/-.

This has taken the price of the Dominar 400 dangerously close to the Rs. 2 lakh mark. What started out as a superb value-for-money offering is now knocking on the doors of the ‘premium’ motorcycle lineup, which isn’t usually synonymous to Bajaj.

However, even with the hikes, both the Bajaj Pulsar NS 160 and the Dominar 400 remain good value thanks to their unmatched performance and features for their respective price tags. The effective prices of the NS 160 and the Dominar 400 stand at Rs. 1,08,589/- (ex-showroom Delhi) and Rs. 1,97,758/- (ex-showroom pan-India).

Lastly, there has been no explanation or update from Bajaj Auto about this hike, as all they did was change the prices on their website. While we understand the pandemic has made life harder, we think the repetitive hikes will affect the sales negatively, especially in the festive season.

Bajaj Dominar 400 Price Hike

  • Bajaj has hiked the prices of the Pulsar NS 160 and the Dominar 400 by Rs. 1500/-
  • The NS 160 has now become the third costliest bike in its segment at Rs. 1,08,589/- (ex-showroom Delhi)
  • While the Dominar is still the cheapest 400cc offering, it’s very close to the Rs. 2 lakh mark at Rs. 1,97,758/- (ex-showroom pan-India).

Bajaj Neuron Trademark
The trademark doesn’t give out any specific details about the type of product

Bajaj Auto has registered the name ‘Neuron’ and it might be a new two-wheeler offering by the Indian manufacturer.

After Honda’s new CB 350, it is safe to say that the sub-400cc segment of commuter-cum-touring motorcycles is definitely flourishing with options.

We suspect that Bajaj might be stepping into this segment as well, with an offering named ‘Neuron’. If so, we expect the bike to take inspiration from the very famous- Avenger series.

The Bajaj Avenger lineup is one of the oldest lineups in the history of the manufacturer. The low stance, comfortable posture, good engine characteristics and a decent set of features at a low price tag, make it a pretty well-rounded package.

We expect Bajaj to retain all these properties from the Avenger if the ‘Neuron’ is indeed a sub-400cc cruiser motorcycle. Further, just like the Dominar, we expect Bajaj to opt for the 390cc engine spec.

This will make life easier for Bajaj’s R&D department, as they already have the motor in use. However, accommodating a 390cc engine in the Avenger’s chassis will be a challenge.

Since there will be no Bajaj branded bike in the Bajaj-Triumph deal, that possibility is ruled out as well.

Lastly, these are just speculations and the ‘Neuron’ might actually turn out to be a different offering as the ‘trademark’ doesn’t mention any specific details. Although we do hope that Bajaj introduces a sub-400cc cruiser motorcycle to take on Royal Enfield and Honda.
